Marc Salyers to Ankara or Moscow?

June 16, 2008

The winner of the 2007-08 Alphonso Ford Trophy given to the top Euroleague scorer, Marc Salyers currently of Chorale de Roanne, gave some indications about his future to our friends at basketsession after the loss in the French Finals this Sunday.

But before talking about his future, Salyers talked about his frustration after the severe loss against SLUC Nancy:

This is a sad end of my time at Roanne. It’s a pity. It is true that we were in trouble pretty early in this game. But there is one thing that I still don’t understand: How is it possible that I just took three shots in the second half? This is something that totally changed the game. In playing this way, we had the wrong attitude.
There were some players that did things that are not their usual job and that took shoots that they don’t usually take. It is not that I think I could have changed the game on my own … The problem is that we have played a certain way the whole year. We cannot change this like this, for one game at a certain moment. People may think that I am bragging, or that I take too many shots. But there is a reason for this. I have an unbreakable confidence in what I do: I do it because I know the shots will go in and I have proven that already many times.

So much about Salyers’ thoughts about his last game in France. What is also interesting to know is where Marc Salyers will be next season.

I don’t know yet. Everybody asks me where I will go but it is still in discussion. I love Turkey, where I have already played before (for Oyak Renault and Fenerbahce) and for the moment I am in talks with Turk Telekom Ankara. On the other hand, my dream would be to play for David Blatt (who recently signed as coach of Dynamo Moscow). But nothing has been decided yet.
I loved to play for Roanne, a city and a country I really loved to live in. It was an extraordinary period for me, winning several titles as a team and individually. I have never been MVP of a country before. It is incredible to reach such a level of recognition. Additionally, I have a very close relationship with my coach Jean-Denys Choulet. We understood each other. I played for him despite better offers from other teams. But basketball remains a business and I have to think about my future and my family.

So it’s highly likely that we’ll see Marc Salyers in Southern or Eastern Europe next season. BallinEurope wishes him all the best and hopes to see him in action next season in the Euroleague!

He will be terribly missed in France. Like him or not, the French basketball scene needs such a high-profile, media-talking personnality. I don’t live in Roanne, but the general feeling is that he was also really close to the fans, absolutely not a mercenary.
By the way his really pretty wife will also be missed by a lot a peepers.

The best EuroLeague sniper Marc Salyers (205-F-79) from Roanne (21,8 ppg, 6,6 rpg) will play in Azovmash this season! He prefered Ukrainian team to Russian Dynamo. By the way, he will play face-to-face with Artur Drozdov from BC Kyiv who knows Salyers by the common work in Pau-Orthez. Simonas Serapinas (197-F-82) from Prokom Trefl is the one more newcomer in Azovmash. So now Mariupol has a strong new roster with Capin, Thompson, Nsonwu, el-Amin, Salyers, Rizvica and Serapinas.
