Olympiacos-Panathinaikos Greek Cup final, certain fan outburst, postponed

March 1, 2011

Like BallinEurope, you may have been wondering just what sort of insanity might go down during the upcoming Olympiacos-Panathinaikos Greek Cup final scheduled for this coming Sunday. Well, wonder no longer, for thanks to a couple of snafus, the decision has been made by the Greek Sports Ministry to postpone the game to a later date.

While the ministry’s original solution was to close the game to any spectators beyond 3,000 invite-only seats to be sold to students; however, the required organization with the educational authorities was not accomplished in time. EƩAKE officials proposed simply selling 1,500 tickets to fans and leaving 6,000 empty seats to act as a “buffer zone,” a suggestion ruled out by the sports ministry.

No date has been set for the Greek Cup final.
The last meeting between the Greek rivals came in January, resulting in a 65-61 Olympiacos upset on PAO’s home floor – a floor the Reds found themselves fleeing moments after the final seconds ticked off the clock as Panathinaikos hurled Molotov cocktail-looking projectiles.

Passion in European basketball, sports at a whole is one of the finest. Yet when a game needs to be posponed due to fear, thats a whole different case. It’s a shame the game can’t be played. But as anyone who knows the PAO v OLY rivalry this is probably the only decision they can make. Especially after the two clubs met in football a few weeks back.

    I still love my Panathinaikos!!!

A few days back (02.03.2011) we had the Greek volleyball cup semi-final, Olympiacos-Panathinaikos, only students in the stands. Zero incidents, zero violence. Even supporters of other teams liked that. For the record, Olympiacos won 3-2.

The federation agrees the final to be held with students, but the ministry wants to have its own way.
