Gasol, Odom take timeout from threepeat prep to pump ESPN 3-D

October 19, 2010

Straight from the man’s Facebook page itself (hell, yes, BiE “likes”), Pau Gasol brings us this candid shot of Lamar Odom, himself and possibly Mike Penberthy shooting a promo ad. The Lakers took a bit of time off from their quest for an NBA championship threepeat to push some 3-D, specifically ESPN’s new 3-D TV offering.

In what no smaller an authority that Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro is calling “a turning point for 3-D,” ESPN has been testing the viability of broadcasting sports in the format for two years and began showing the results to a nationwide audiences on June 11 with showings of some World Cup games with the new technology.

Though the schedule has thus far featured only once-weekly broadcasts of NCAA football, the Gasol-Odom commercial would seem to imply that the NBA will get its turn in the three-dimensional spotlight this season.

Just a couple of questions, then: Is everyone sure this whole 3-D thing isn’t just a fad (i mean, it was twice before)? And when will ESPN America be in 3-D?
