Bonus stat: Professional clubs sending most players to 2012 Olympics

June 24, 2012

From among the preliminary rosters of European team still remaining in contention for the 2012 Olympic Games, who do you suppose are the most represented professional clubs? While most wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Euroleague finalists CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos lead the way with seven and six players, respectively, check out the interesting roster put together in 2011-12 by PBL side Lokomotiv Kuban, with potentially six players in the Olympics on four teams.

A handful of teams sent three players each to preliminaries; those with four or more are listed below.

(For comparison’s sake, NBA finalists the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder each have four players currently listed on competing national team rosters.)

CSKA Moscow – 7 (Kaun, Khryapa, Kirilenko, Ponkrashov, Shved, Voronov, Vorontsevich for Team Russia)

Olympiacos – 6 (Spanoulis, Printezis, Papanikolaou, Sloukas, Mantzaris for Greece; Antic for FYR Macedonia)

Lokomotiv Kuban – 6 (Bykov, Grigoryev for Russia; Ilievski, Mejsi for FYR Macedonia; Jasaitis for Lithuania, Traore for France)

Panathinaikos – 4 (Calathes, Kaimakoglou, Vougioukas for Greece; Jasikevičius for Lithuania)

Montepaschi Siena – 4 (Zisis for Greece; McCalebb for FYR Macedonia; Kaukėnas, Mačiulis for Lithuania)

Real Madrid – 4
(Rodriguez, Llull, Reyes for Spain; Pocius for Lithuania)

Valencia BC – 4 (De Colo, Pietrus for France; Martinez, Claver for Spain)
