BallinEurope’s Euroleague Regular Season All-Star Team

December 21, 2012

As The Continent has bid adieu to eight teams’ Euroleague bids for 2012-13, BallinEurope looks back briefly to take a brief look back at the regular season’s best – not to mention spindly some quality time outside the mall and in front of the YouTube.

The BallinEurope 2012-13 Euroleague Regular Season All-Star Team looks as follows.

• Vassilis Spanoulis, Olympiacos. It’s almost getting difficult to find new ways to trumpet Olympiacos’ success and Spanoulis’ outstanding leadership in calendar year 2012. (They haven’t lost a game in two months? Whoa! Oops, sorry.) Sheer numbers fail to tell the entire story of the Reds’ leader’s first 10 EL games this season, but we love the stats here, so boggle away: How about 16.0 ppg on 46.6% overall shooting to go with 5.9 assists, 1.0 steals and *1.77 blocks* in 28½ minutes per game? BiE reckons Spanoulis was regular-season MVP, an idea backed by Euroleague Adventures’ Sam Meyerkopf in the latest episode of the heinnews/BallinEurope co-produced “Taking the Charge” podcast series. (Shameless self-promotion over.)

• Bobby Brown, Montepaschi Siena. Sure, there were doubters when the budget-crunched Italian side picked up a reputed black hole with the ball to replace some guy named McCalebb. But after a 2010-11 spent outside pan-European competition with Oldenburg, Brown is displaying a passing game unseen since his days at Fullerton. His 5.7 assists per game are easily a career high on any professional level and ranked him third in this category and in assist/turnover ratio through the first 10 EL games. O, he also led the ‘League in points, three-pointers, free throws made and attempted – just call him Bobby Brown 2.0. Bo Who?

• Viktor Khyrapa, CSKA Moscow. Nenad Krstic seems to be getting a lion’s share of the credit for the Red Army’s quite awesome defense as of late, and fair enough. But to the defense-loving fan, Khyrapa is a monster back up to his Euroleague defensive MVP level of 2010; applying Bill Simmons’ simple-but-telling “stocks” (steals + blocks) statistic, Khyrapa’s 2.6 per game trailed only Stephane Lasme (3.0) and Ante Tomic (2.8). The point: With Khyrapa playing as a four with the skills of a three, a lot of defense is turning into CSKA transition offense – and wins.

• Sonny Weems, CSKA Moscow. And the career rise continues…

• Aron Baynes, Union Olimpija. It’s tough not to go with Krstic (and his ‘League-leading 66.67% true shooting percentage, but Baynes did more with less on the marginal Olimpija through the first 10. Aside from 22-year-old Alen Omic, the big Aussie was the only natural center on the Slovenian side and *was* the frontcourt some nights. Leading his team in points and rebounds, Baynes was just two boards short of being the only Euroleaguer to average a double-double in the first phase, “settling” instead for marks of 13.8 ppg and 9.8 rpg. Hopefully, this award will make up in a tiny way for the team’s disappointing finish.

What about Bourousis? But…but…but I though he was one of the best big men in the world? How can yet another year pass where he isn’t hands down the best big man in a league that is not as deep or talented as the NBA?

  3. Bourousis Was First

Aron Baynes did no make it past the regular season, his team had a worse record, in an easier group than Bourousis was playing in, and he was on this list – even having a lower index rating than Bourousis.

It’s the OPINION OF ONE PERSON.

Where is Jordan Farmar? The guy you GUARANTEED would win Euroleague MVP? Where is he?

Bourousis had the highest PIR in Euroleague, and none of your trolling can change that.

    http://www.euroleague.net/main/statistics?mode=Leaders&entity=Players&seasonmode=Single&seasoncode=E2012&cat=Valuation&agg=PerGame

Oh yeah, Jordan Farmar, who you said, “will for sure be the Euroleague MVP”, and is “the Michael Jordan of Europe” according to you, was 24th. Bourousis was 1st.

You also guaranteed that, “Rudy Fernandez will completely destroy, and totally dominate and annihilate the entire Euroleague like never before seen”.

He was 19th. Bourousis was 1st.

You also predicted that, “Shelden Williams will instantly be the best center in Euroleague.” He was 21st. Bourousis was 1st.

You also predicted that, “Hilton Armstrong would definitely be voted as the best center in the Euroleague, and will clearly totally dominate the entire Euroleague”. He was cut due to poor play by his team.

    Bourousis was 1st.

You also predicted that, “Sonny Weems will dominate the whole Euroleague like no other before him”. He was 13th. Bourousis was 1st.

You claimed that, “Bobby Brown is the single greatest player player in all of Europe today, and totally dominates all stats like no other player.” He was 4th. Bourousis was 1st.

Bourousis did not make it past the regular season. None of his stats count. His PIR is not going to count because he did not make it past the regular season. This will be the 4th year in a row that Bourousis will not make an All-Euroleague team. What a loser! In the NBA he would be regulated to the D-league!. Can’t even make an All-Euroleague team in 4 years! What a loser!!!

Aron Baynes did not make it past the Euroleague regular season. He’s on this list. Why are you not calling him out, calling out the site owner for putting him on the list?

Why are you not making fun of Baynes, and mocking him?

Why is that only Bourousis gets your criticism?

Why is that you ignore that Milano cut Richard Hendrix, Omar Cook, and Rok Stipkovic and said they were the case of the team’s failures, with Sariolo, the team’s coach singling out Hendriz and especially Cook as the culprits?

Why is that you ignore the biggest European basketball news website saying the reason they did not advance was caused by the ball hogging of Keith Langford?

Why is it that you ignore this and continue to bash on one player endlessly here?

You are a pure hater, and it’s really bizarre that this site allows you to ruin it on a daily basis. Because basically, this site is a total piece of shit because of you. People don’t come here to read the rants of a raving mad lunatic hater every day, but that is all they ever get when they come here, thanks to you.

I’m not sure you’re the same person but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

No one has ever claimed that Aron Baynes is one of the best centers in the world that is why I am not mocking him.

In reality Bourousis is not a bad player. He is a good Euroleague center. That being said, he is not even the best Euroleague center, behind players such as Krstic, Batiste, and in the opinion of the person who wrote this article, Aron Baynes. If Bourousis can not even dominate in Euroleague I believe he would struggle to stay on an NBA roster and at the very most would be a back-up. So by having this troll say that Bourousis is better than Howard, Marc Gasol, Chandler and a prime Divac and any other great center is what brings scorn upon him.

I laughed for at least a good 5 minutes at this god damn disgusting piece of human trash saying Batiste is a better center than Bourousis………………

            My fucking GOD

Os Davis, you really should be doing something about this guy. What level of trolling are you going to allow here?

Mike Batiste is the single most totally and completely washed up player in the entire Euroleague. He can barely even move on the court, and struggles to run up and down the floor, and to even dunk the ball………….the guy is the absolute definition of has been.

He was absolutely terrible all of last year with Olympiacos, got completely destroyed by Olympiacos bigs in the Greek finals, and this season he is seriously fighting for the title of the worst player in the entire Euroleague.

He may be the worst center in the entire Turkish League.

And this fucking unbelievably bastard just claimed he is better than Bourousis. For the love of god, OS Davis, do something about this trolling.

Add to that Bourousis only has one All-Euroleague first team selection while Batiste has an All-Euroleague 1st team selection and 2nd team selection.

My only conclusion just looking at those numbers at face value is that they’re both scrubs but Borousis is more of a scrub playing in a 2nd tier league. LOL

I was going to say like Bourousis would have the time to waste reading comments, but then again he didn’t even make the Euroleague Top 16. Maybe he should spend some time developing his game in the playground, I know all kids love having big, slow, unathletic guys to posterize.

Mike Batiste is a has been. He was a has been last year too. He got completely dominated every time he played against guys like Kirilenko and Dorsey. A few years ago, he would have destroyed those guys.

Batiste can barely even jump anymore. All the things Gabe says about Bourousis – “slow, stiff, can’t run, can’t jump (which are not true), are TRUE in the case of Batiste.

He’s an ex player, that is at the twilight of his career and will be lucky to find a role playing 5 minutes on some team next year. If anything, he should have retired two years ago.

Comparing him now to current Bourousis is an incredible insult to Bourousis. The euros are right. There is some crazy level haterade in this site. I bet Bourousis did Gabe’s wife up her rear, and mike’s too.

That’s the only logical explanation for how crazy this haterade and vitriol here is.

The NBA equivalent trolling of this would be claiming that Maruc Camby is currently better than Marc Gasol. That’s the level of TROLLING going on here.

Yes I give it to you that THIS year Batiste is a has been and Bourousis had a better year, but just last year Batiste was averaging 9.7 and 4.6 being the 2nd leader scorer and 2nd leading rebounder on a team that made the final four, not to mention being selected to All-Euroleague 2nd team, the year after being selected to All-Euroleague 1st team and being the leading scorer and rebounder on the Euroleague champions. So up until this year Batiste has been a much better player than Bourousis.

So last year Batiste averaged 9.7 and 4.6 on a final four team and was selected all-Euroleague 2nd team while Bourousis averaged 9 and 5.4 on a team that couldn’t advance out of the top 16 yet Batiste should have retired two year ago…yeah if only to have given Bourousis a chance to make an all-Euroleague team! lol

Nando de Colo not impressed by the NBA.

    http://www.lavoixdunord.fr/sports/nando-de-colo-l-interview-integrale-la-nba-c-est-ia213b0n920419

Is the NBA still a magical level?

You know, I’m not really impressed by it. It’s not magical, but now that I’m in it, I realize that it’s exceptional that the media is talking about it in the whole country. The littlest thing, on or off the court, immediately ends up on TV. The team does everything for you, so that you only have to worry about basketball. I’ve already said it, but it’s the first time that I go to practice without having to carry a bag or sneakers. I’m surprised each day about some of the customs.

The funny thing is how the American fans express themselves. If you do a simple no look pass, then they think it’s the assist of the century! They have a different approach to sports than we do in Europe. If your shot rolls around the rim three times before it goes in, then they claim that you have a good, soft “shooter’s touch”. In France, we would just admit that we got lucky. They do these little things in practice to try to help the players.

They’re all about the show. Every day, after the games, there are Top 5 and Top 10 play lists all over everywhere. They also do the same for all the other sports, which they also follow inside and out. What made me laugh recently during a timeout, in a game in Oklahoma, was that the fans were wearing costumes in the crowd. They don’t care about looking ridiculous, they just come to root for their team. That’s nice.

Is Vassilis Spanoulis good enough to play in the NBA, and if so, why and in what team?

    Josh Powell:

“Sure he can. Vassilis is a great player and I think he can make it in the NBA. Because he can play well in both a half court set game, and also in a team that likes to play fast. I would choose the Boston Celtics or the San Antonio Spurs, who play a lot of the game in the half court set and with the pick and roll. Though, if he had had to play in a team that likes to run and score a lot of points, I would choose the Golden State Warriors.”
