Rest in peace, Moni Fanan

October 20, 2009

Sad news from Israel was reported last night, and the condolences are pouring in today. Israeli police last night reported the death of former Maccabi Tel Aviv executive and staple Moni Fanan, who retired from his duties with the team last year. Fanan reportedly committed suicide by hanging. He was 63. The official Euroleague press release follows the break.

(Euroleague.net) — Euroleague Basketball joins the entire European basketball family in mourning the passing of Moni Fanan, the former vice chairman and team manager of Maccabi Tel Aviv, on Monday. Mr. Fanan left Maccabi in the summer of 2008, after 16 seasons both on the board and on the bench, culiminating in the team’s back-to-back Euroleague titles in 2004 and 2005. He had also been a part-owner of the club. “It is a sad day for basketball, and especially for those of us who enjoyed working side-by-side with Moni during so many seasons,” Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his family. Euroleague Basketball will dearly miss a great friend of our sport.”

There are a couple of scenarios that have been floated around as to why he committed suicide. One is that last week he was not invited by Maccabi for the 40th anniversary of Shimon Mizrahi’s association with Maccabi. There were stars and executives past and present there, but no Moni. His wife reported that he was watching it on TV stoned face and depressed. The other report is that he apparently owes players, former players and others in the basketball world huge sums of money and he had not been able to pay up. Here is the Jerusalem Post story, but the Hebrew articles on the Israeli sports websites have much more information than this http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1255694848184&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

Maariv newspaper reports that after the Maccabi Euroleague game last Thursday night he overdosed on sleeping pills and was in bad shape. An ambulance was sent to his house that evening.

    A pretty sad story.

More and more players and coaches are coming to the forefront saying Moni Fanan had invested millions with them including former player Esteban Batista $800K and David Blatt $2million.

As well there are also now reports of his investing money with referees. This will place Maccabi in a very bad situation and this story unfortunately keeps taking more turns for the worse.
