Reviewing the last play of Panathinaikos vs. Olympiakos

May 5, 2009

For some reason, I felt like reviewing the last play by Olympiakos, in which they had 13 seconds to tie the game and send it into overtime. At first, it looked like Yiannis Boroussis missed the post-up move and lost the game for Olympiakos. It was hard to see since Boroussis is a very(!) passionate player and just LOVES Olympiakos and his team.

After reviewing this video, I am sure our opinion will change. Lynn Greer dribbled the ball to the wing with 10 seconds to go, when Boroussis sets a pick for him. Yiannis rolls to the basket but his defender stays with Greer. I didn’t see any player more open during the entire Final Four than Boroussis then. Greer could have easily made the pass to give Boroussis an easy dunk to tie the game. Panathinaikos would have had about three seconds to score a basket – which would have been very hard.

Just imagine if Lynn Greer made the pass: Boroussis would have scored and Olympiakos would have had a chance to kick Panathinaikos out of the final! Check out the video:

You are absolutely correct! Whoa, Greer totally did not see Boroussis, forcing him to play Yao Ming for five seconds. Ouch.
