¡Viva La Pistola! Ricky Rubio goes for first NBA triple-double against Spurs [video]

History in the making? Ricky “The Human YouTube Highlight Clip” Rubio lived up to BallinEurope’s sobriquet last night in his Minnesota Timberwolves’ 107-83 win over the San Antonio Spurs. Rubio’s 25-point, 13-rebound, 12-assist performance was the first 20+/12/12 triple double against the Spurs since Larry Bird – and totally makes for one sweet YouTube clip in its own right. See for yourself in the nicely tightly-edited two-some minutes from the league below.

(Incidentally, BiE’s said it before and may say it again: How about that Rubio-to-Williams connection, eh?)

Rubio could have a great year next season when all of the Wolves injured players come back. Ricky is stuffing the stat sheet but his play is not yet leading to wins. He will have the summer to work on his scoring and shooting. I said it before and will say again: Rubio will be a top 5 PG in the NBA.

Rubio has had YEARS to “work on his shooting”. EVERY year we hear this “he will learn to shoot this summer” crap.

Rubio can’t shoot and he;s always going to be that way. His shot has not improved one iota since hew as 16 years old.

Look as Jason Kidd. He has improved his shooting. Unfortunately it has happened once he is past his prime but as a 40 year old he is now a much better shooter than 10, 20 years ago. Maybe Rubio can improve sooner.

I bet Gregg Popovich convinced R.C. Buford to vote Carmelo for MVP as a prank. I’m also susirpred that LeBron didn’t get 100% of the votes for best at each position . He had 73.3% at SF and 16.7% at PF, which means that 3 GMs didn’t think he was the best SF or PF. We know the Cavs GM is one, but I wonder who the other 2 are.

Rubio’s still young and still developing so let’s give him a bit of a break with his weak shooting, but what’s intriguing about Rubio besides the stat stuffing is his defense. So far he is only showing glimpses of it but the other night against Houston and Harden, he drew 2 straight offensive fouls on Harden, who’s having a breakout year. I can imagine Rubio being a key cog in a championship team where he shoots open jumpers and leads fastbreaks and averages something like 12ppg, 5rpg, 10apg, 2spg. He could anchor a team’s defense from the perimeter with his long arms and fundamentally sound defense.
