Rolling the dice on NBA and NCAA odds

January 8, 2017

With March Madness around the corner, BiE takes a spin on the roulette wheel to see who offers the best odds for big success in the NCAA championship along with a look at the current odds in the NBA.

There’s never a true unbackable option in January for March Madness but this year the top of the board offers more value than ever. With nobody really looking unbeatable, oddmakers are having a brutal time working out how to sort out the top of the field or even to work out how many teams fit into that top tier. At 6/1 the Duke Blue Devils are the favourites and, whatever you make of Tripping Ballers U, that’s a really long price for the outright favourite at this point of the season.

The value plays continue down the chain with the Kentucky Wildcats at 9/1, defending champions Villanova at 10/1, Kansas Jayhawks at 11/1, and UCLA rounding out the top five at 12/1. Again, the fifth favourite to win it all right now is 12/1. Those odds are ridiculous.

Think about it this way, when you go into a top tier online casino you expect good odds across the board because if you don’t you are taking your business elsewhere. With basketball, there really aren’t that many alternatives so value plays of this nature should be cherished when they come along.

The NBA market by contrast is pretty miserable right now. The absolute best you will get on the Golden State Warriors is 4/5 while the Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t a whole lot better at 15/4, particularly with the Cavs all but a lock for the Eastern Conference after acquiring Kyle Korver.

The logical move right now is to go in hard on Cleveland and get ready to lay that bet come the finals. It’s hard to see the Warriors going any shorter than 4/7 due to the value situation but there’s a bit more room here than it appears. The Clippers are just hanging right out there at 25/1 and that’s where you make your smart assault. Back them now, come the playoffs lay on the Warriors, then look to be in a winning position assuming either Golden State or Cleveland wins it all.
