Rumor du jour: Real Madrid interested in Nesterović

January 13, 2010

Heard on the grapevine: Toronto Raptors benchwarmer Rasho Nesterović is heading to Real Madrid. That’s the word currently making the rounds around the internet and back, though little press seems to indicate any tangible truth to the story.

Among the earliest to report the Spanish team’s seeming interest in Nesterović was the Toronto Sun, which via wire reports, stated that:

According to website Sportske.net, Spanish basketball team Real Madrid is searching for a centre and currently is negotiating with the Raptors little-used Rasho Nesterovic. If the club fails to sign the Slovenian, Darko Milicic will be coach Ettore Messina’s main target.

Plausible, one supposes, as Madrid might use more firepower out of the low post, except that the source cited carries no recent information on the pursuit. Ettore Messina was indeed reported at Sportske.net as coveting Nesterović, but that was back in July.

Well … anybody here hear anything…?

Real Madrid is very close to signing croatian Ante Tomic of Zagreb. Tomic is a currenty Adriatic League MVP, averaging 18ppg and 9rpg, drafted by Utah Jazz two years ago in second round. This is according to Marca…He is compared to Pau Gasol and Gregor Fuchka and is supposed to be Ettore Messina’s long term solution. He is 216cm tall and can play power forward.

Tomic is done deal. Acording to “24sata” he will play one more game against Zvezda on saturday night. Hame will be bradcasted on HRT2. He will be given capiten track and there will be some small ceremony in his honer since he is best player in history of small KK Zagreb team.

Man, these web sites in the Balkans will cook up just about anything. Real Madrid was going after Tomic all the time, not after Milicic or Nesterovic. Tomic just played his last Adriatic League game on Saturday and will sign a contract with Madrid on Monday. He’s a 7-3, 22 year-old center.
