Serbia crisis affects Euroleague

February 27, 2008

As Douglas Hamilton from Reuters reports, Serbia went back on the offensive over Kosovo’s independence on Sunday by blaming the United States for a crisis in the Balkans while its ally Russia accused the Americans of destroying “world order”.

Three days after rioters in Belgrade attacked Western embassies and looted shops, Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said it was Washington that was threatening peace and stability.

“The United States must annul the decision to recognize a false state on the territory of Serbia,” Kostunica said. “It must reaffirm U.N. Security Council resolution 1244, which guarantees Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This is the political side of this crisis but now it also affects Basketball. Sinan Can, who covers the Turkish basketball for eurobasket.com writes:

EFES Pilsen shocked just before the away game against Partizan which will be played Thursday, as four of the American players, Drew Nicholas, Loren Woods, Rashad Wright and Andre Hutson, refused to go Serbia due to security reasons. Efes Pilsen GM Engin Ozerhun said, ‘We do know that the US government warned their citizens not to travel to Serbia, because of the situation in Kosovo, but Serbian government gave us warranty for a safe game and trip as we all had to go there. Scoonie Penn and Kenny Gregory decided to come and play including our US citizen coach David Blatt, but other four Americans refused to travel.

This is definitely unacceptable situation as I can easily say that those four players, Drew Nicholas, Loren Woods, Rashad Wright and Andre Hutson will not play for us anymore.’ Efes Pilsen arrived Belgrade with 8 players, but due to rules there should be 10 players for an official game as there’ll be a meeting with ULEB authorities to play the game with 8 players.

I really don’t want to be the judge if it is right for the players not to go or if it is right to release the players. I just think that their are other really important people like US president Bush, who travels to even more threatening places all the time, doesn’t he?

But then – is it smart to release almost 1/3 of your roster just to set an example? You tell me … (Thanks to our great readers, who brought this topic up).

EDIT: The Euroleague just released an official note regarding the game tomorrow:

Euroleague Basketball has spoken to both Partizan Igokea and Efes Pilsen in order to ensure the utmost security during Thursday night’s Top 16 game in Belgrade. Partizan and local police have guaranteed security for the visitors from Efes Pilsen, having presented a security plan approved by the Turkish Embassy in Belgrade. Euroleague Basketball has a representative present in Belgrade who will attend to any of Efes’s concerns or needs while in the city. “The security of Euroleague teams is of utmost concern and will always be a priority,” Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu said. “Regarding the Efes players who have not gone to Belgrade, we know that the team is still trying to get them to come to Belgrade, although the game will be played regardless, as scheduled. Euroleague rules do not prohibit games from being played with fewer than the mandated 10 players on the bench, but call for a disciplinary proceeding to be considered when that minimum is not met. If Efes must participate in the game with fewer than 10 players, a course of action will be decided at a later stage.”

At least we have a game!

Will the match take place or not? … It will be a mess if it gets postponed to another day.. On the other hand, there is a rule apparently that a team shows up with 10 players, and Efes only has 8 now.. Do you think it might be decided on paper? With a virtual score of 2-0 or whatever they use in basketball …

    What a mess …

I really don’t think that President Bush applies here at all. If someone is going to guarantee Loren Woods two dozen Secret Service members, a personal bulletproof escort, barricaded streets everywhere he goes and a thousand other security measures, then I’m sure he would reconsider. I’m 10000% sure that even President Bush with all the protection he has wouldn’t dare step foot anywhere near Serbia right now. So really what are u trying to say?

The players didn’t do this because they are being lazy or dishonest. They know as well as the rest of us that people have absolutely NO control over what goes on at basketball matches in places like Serbia. We’ve seen countless examples of that over the years. They are going to put themselves at the mercy of a crazy mob, which is not what u want to do.

They probably could have gone about this in a better way, but we don’t know the entire story right now.

and if Efes wants to forfeit their season by releasing them (I’d be willing to bet $1000 that this is a false and hollow threat) then they should go ahead and do it. What they’ll probably do is unilaterally impose a big fine on the players and take it out of their next salary.

This could be a good way for them to get out of the 2nd year of Loren Woods’ ridiculous bloated contract I imagine. But they aren’t going to give up on the Turkish league and Euroleague to do it.

PS – And of course, the euroleague mentions nothing about it on the front page … On the fantasy update however, they give this information:

‘Drew Nicholas, Andre Hutson, Rashad Wright and Loren Woods did not make the team’s flight to Belgrade to play against Partizan and therefore are doubtful for Thursday’s game.’

🙂 .. It ‘d be funny if someone reads this without prior knowledge of what actually happened, he ‘d think ‘oh, they just missed the flight, had a long cup of coffee in the airport and forgot to get on board’ .. WTf?? ..

I guess euroleague does not want to get political at all, not even mentioning what happened, but they should give information about this…

I really do have a different point of view. I respect what you say and of course the “George Bush example” wasnt all serious – I am sure the hate in some countries against Bush is also bigger than to four US Basketball players.

I just think it is unfair to think that everybody in that gym would have been or will be against these four guys – it is not like ALL of Serbia is the devil now.

    From euroleague.net

So it seems that those players still aren’t released..

Suffice to say, Lauren Woods is a little less important than the President of the United States. When Bush goes to Iraq he is protected by a massive security presence; obviously the American military and security services spare no expense to protect the President.

Woods and his teammates would have been protected by a guarantee from the Serbian government. You know, the same government at odds with the United States, the same government that guaranteed the security of the American embassy.

Shame on this two-bit club for firing their players because they obeyed the advice of their government and sensibly avoided real danger.

I wouldn’t exactly refer to Efes Pilsen as a “two-bit club.” At the same time, from what information is available, I find myself agreeing with Woods, Nicholas, Wright and Hutson. I don’t see the situation residing over the uncertain atmosphere in the stadium; rather, I see the players worrying about being a target before and after the game, in travel.

My opinion can definitely change, especially if information is made available stating that both Efes Pilsen and the Serbian government detailed–or at least made a confident analysis–the dangers against the players and team, and the precautions taken to ensure their safety.

The entire crowd doesn’t have to be against a player for an incident to happen. In recent years, throughout most of the sports world, it has become more and more apparent only one person with an agenda can cause a major incident, in the stadium, on the street, at a phone booth.

An embassy is a lot more important than a basketball court. They couldn’t protect the embassy. The US govt is evacuating all non-essential personnel and you want people to go there and risk their lives for a basketball game ???? No amount of money would make me visit a country that couldn’t even protect the embassy. I am sorry but it’s ridiculous to ask players to risk their lives over a basketball game.

If I have to decide on safety based what the US govt and the Serbian govt say I’ll go with the US govt.

This is what happens when you feed your citizens with series like ’24’ and then they go around thinking that they are a target of ‘evil forces’ who are turning against them… I feel pity for these people.

Serbian govt didn’t guarantee safety for Embassies during the rally. In fact, they did encourage some form of riots and police was nowhere to be seen. Damage to the embassies was intentional.

On the other hand, when they _do_ guarantee safety, it is absolutely certain they will do their utmost to protect the participants, be they Americans, Turkish or whatever else and Serbian police is usually quite good at it.

Turkish Embassy did get involved in organizing security for the game – why didn’t the American Embassy do its job and did the same? We all know why – because they need these players _not_ to come to Belgrade. Serbs are the Bad Guys, you know…

Arkodios we have finally agreed upon a matter.. Nice example of the show ’24’ on the matter at hand.. BOTTOM LINE: If two US born players + THE ALBANIAN BORN ERMAL KUQO, WHO’S THE ONE WHO SHOULD BE CONCERNED IF THERE IS ANY MATTER OF WORRYING TO DO, are on board with the game, why do the four other players decide not to come? That’s just bull.. Kenny G and Scoonie are real pros and Loren Woods actually helps by not coming.. Can’t say that about Andre though.. Make sure to get Ermal Kuqo and Kerem Gonlum on your fanasy rosters people!
PS: Watch out for Barıs Hersek to come off the bench.. He’s a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge potential and a shoe in NBA players in the years to come.. and is only 20, standing at 2.06 plays SF! (Similar to M-Gurovic who was released today)

Why does it always have to be about americans people? I happen to come from ex-Yu and know the situation a bit better. Why don’t you think that turkish players had more reasons to stay? after all Serbs are pissed with Turkey for recognising Kosovo the very first day. Or Ermal Kuqo? Who is originally albanian and would have more than anybody reason not to go right? But no, we are discussing about 4 wossies that decided to play smart and decide not to discuss their issues on time but on a very day of the flight. How come Scoonie and Kenny went? What double standars allpy for them in Serbia? What you are forgettng is that great B-ball player or any sports player for that matter is not only about points and stats – it is also about having balls and being a team player – which these four never were nor will be! Thats what I think.

This is for Jonathan G and for the other people who believe that going for a basketball game in Belgrade, Serbia is dangerous for American players or for any other player whose country has recognized Kosovo. We are not a nation of “idiots”, we love sports and every team that has come to our country came and left with all their players unharmed. On the other hand, because of all the political pressure from America to take away Kosovo from Serbia, yes we did kick your ambassador out and your embassy was on fire but that was a protest to your government which thinks that it can do whatever it pleases, I mean you guys already run the whole UN, you got the GB, France, Italy all licking your *alls, you have your army in the Middle East providing you the oil, and now you are trying to take on the Orthodox community on so the situation which America is in right now is because of the idiots who run your country. However, COME TO SPORTS, I CAN GARANTEE THAT ALL THE PLAYERS WOULD BE SAFE and I do not blame the four guys who did not come to play the game because they are worried for their security and they should be (AND EFES SHOULD NOT JUST LET THEM GO), however this is a problem that the United States of America has brought up on individuals who belong to its nation. So far America has filtered the information well and has its public believing what Mr. Bush wants them to believe, however, we will see how long that goes for … Once again, Serbia loves sports and any athlete will be welcome to our fields of play!

Look, athletes are not the brightest of bulbs most of the time and these nimrods decided to listen to that great speaker of truth; GW Bush. They have only themselves to blame.
(well, I also blame the US media. As someone who lives in Greece, I am fully aware of the information the average american gets from CNN, ABC and so on. Its on par to the old soviet era Pravda.)
Ask american reporters who were there when the US bombed for three months if there was any backlash to them while the bombings happened.

The embassy looting was not prevented because it sends a message. Just like the US breaking another UN security council resolution sends another. Im willing to bet the cops directed looters and helped them climb over. Then US then took if up with their pulling off personnel and warning. Dumb jock gets caught in something that CNN hasnt prepared him to deal with.

Basketball however is a different story. The police there would do their jobs if they had to but having travelled to quite a few places in europe for basketball, I doubt it would be needed. Btw, my cousin travelled to Bosnian federation by bus and supporters got pulled over the side of road as got threathened by police in the bus with guns. And Turkey is a whole ugly ball of wax.

C’mon, Tel Aviv has a team in the league and you wouldnt catch me going there yet full of pro players go and play. Where is there more of a chance of a terrorist attack at a ballgame but there? (I guess all these good news also means the Palestinian state will be officially recognized soon now….. I wonder when they can get a basketball national team going. Southern Ossetia, Basque National team, Corsican national team,…wow, think how many more ‘nations’ there will be for european competition when we approve everyone)

Dumb Hollywood starlets also venture to the outposts of the empire to amuse the occupying troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and the other 40-50 places there are bases and they are in much bigger danger, I dont see anyone make a big deal. IF a pregnant Angelian Jolie can go do a PR jaunt to Bagdad, I think mediocre ballplayers can go play a game.

I was there last spring for a european judo tournament and i have to warn people of the dangers of sljvivovitz. There should definitely be a warning on that stuff.

If the 4 are smart, they will take the next flight, show up as a surprise, win the game, and the whole thing will be laughed at as a decoy. If they dont show up, then it depends on what contracts say, and since there IS trouble in Serbia right now, they might have contractual rights to not go.

By the way, Robza stick to the politics of your country – I hate when people think they know all about global politics and background of issues in countries they never even travelled to. Just to remind you all that 4 years back Pamesa Valencia players refused to travel to Tel Aviv for a top-16 match and got a technical loss for it. Now, Efes will have most of their players there and the game should be held as planned. Everything else is internal Efes affairs. EL should take no step in this regard.
