Team Spain takes U16 tourney, garners sixth medal in 2009

August 17, 2009

Congratulations this morning go out to – believe it or not – Team Spain, who managed to knock off host Lithuania in Kaunas, 70-64. Jaime Fernandez led all scorers in the final game, putting in 20 points just as he had in the semifinal against Serbia.

For those of you keeping score at home, Spain adds this latest medal to the trophy case along with the golds from the U18 European Championship Women and U16 European Championship Women; silvers from the U20 European Championship Women and U19 World Championship for Women; and a bronze from the U20 European Championship Men – all earned in 2009 thus far. Also recently encased in Espana are the men’s silvers from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and EuroBasket 2007.

All in all, not a bad couple of years for Spanish basketball…

Actually in Kaunas sports hall (where Zalgiris pays), not Vilnius. All U-16 was played in Kaunas. Btw, athmosphere were fantastic! You could think that Zalgiris is playing Euroleague game or against Rytas or our men NT is playing and not 16 years old kids… 🙂 Arena were full and very loud 🙂 Saras also came to see the game and was cheering very much for the youngsters 🙂

sss: ironically, during LKL finals empty orange seats really stand out… didn’t see anything like that in the final

Please correct the mistake. They played in Kaunas, not in Vilnius
