The first word (from Turkey) – Euroleague news

January 28, 2008

Some European news outlets like newspapers do publish their news in English. Thanks to a huge fan base for basketball, they also publish articles about their Euroleague teams and I think this should be published.

Today’s Zaman (Turkey): Panathinaikos became the Euroleague basketball Group C winner after thrashing Fenerbahçe Ülker 88-68 at the Athens Indoor Olympic Arena on Thursday night. Panathinaikos improved to 12-1, kept the best record in the competition and enters the Top 16 draw as one of the top-seeded teams, according to a report on euroleague. com. Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe dropped to 6-7, but had already qualified for the Top 16 on Wednesday, when Cibona’s loss sent the Turkish champs through.

Turkish Daily News (Turkey): Efes Pilsen lost its chance to a place in the top two in Group B of the Euroleague after losing 84-74 to Aris TT Bank Wednesday. Having already qualified for the group, Efes hoped it could get a win against the Greek side in the last home game of the round, but a bad-played fourth quarter finished off the Istanbul team. “It is so weird to let 30 points in the last period,” said Efes Pilsen Manager Engin Özerhun. “Some of our players were having a really bad day, the efforts of the rest of the team were not enough for the win,” Özerhun said. Drew Nicholas led his team with 20 points. Center Loren Woods added 10 points and nine rebounds. Efes Pilsen will take on second-place Unicaja next week and may finish the group third if they get a win. The Istanbul side is now fourth with a 6-7 record and awaits the defeat of Maccabi Tel-Aviv as well.
