The Euroleague’s top 33 (or who will compete in the 2012-13 EL)

May 31, 2012

This just in. The Euroleague has announced prospective licensing for the 2012-13 season; a few surprises in here, at least as far as BallinEurope is concerned…

A-license teams include:
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
Asseco Prokom Gdynia
Caja Laboral Baskonia
CSKA Moscow
FC Barcelona Regal
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
Lottomatica Roma
Maccabi Tel Aviv
Montepaschi Siena
Olympiacos
Panathinaikos
Real Madrid
Unicaja Malaga
Zalgiris Kaunas

Further explains the ‘League: “The A Licence club with the lower ranking, calculated by the performance of teams in European competitions during a three-year period, may lose its licence. … The A Licence team with the lowest ranking at the end of the 2011-12 season is Lottomatica Roma.”

Prospective B-license teams include the following.
1. The Spanish champion
2. CSKA Moscow
3. Olympiacos Piraeus or Panathinaikos Athens
4. Italian champion
5. Anadolu Efes Istanbul or Besiktas JK Milangaz
6. French champion
7. Brose Baskets Bamberg or Ratiopharm Ulm
8. Zalgiris Kaunas
9. Partizan Belgrade
10. Cedevita Zagreb
11. Union Olimpija
12. Spain runner-up
13. BC Khimki Moscow Region
14. Olympiacos or Panathinaikos (as Greek League runner-up)
15. Italian runner-up
16. Lietuvos Rytas
17. Anadolu Efes Istanbul or Besiktas JK Milangaz (as TBL runner-up)
18. French runner-up
19. Brose Baskets Bamberg or Ratiopharm Ulm (as German runner-up)
20. Maccabi Tel Aviv (based on Adriatic League championship)
21. Telenet BC Oostende or Spirou Charleroi
22. CEZ Nymburk
23. BC Donetsk
24. Maccabi Tel Aviv (as Israeli champion)
25. Asseco Prokom Gdynia or Trefl Sopot
26. PBC Lukoil Academic
27. Eiffel Towers Den Bosch
28. VEF Riga

Nine of the 28 B-licensees are redundant as A- or C-licensees already, so the entire field has already been reduced to 33 teams; this would be further reduced by two should Asseco Prokom win in Poland and Montepaschi Siena appear in the Serie A finals, both of which seem likely.

We can therefore infer that the eight-team qualification round will consist of VEF Riga, Eiffel Towers, Lukoil Academic, BC Donetsk, CEZ Nymburk, the Belgian champion, the German runner-up and the French runner-up. (Besiktas is in the 2012-13 Euroleague? Nice!)

Lemme make a fearless prediction of what will happen eventually (assuming Valencia loses to Barca in the semis):
Roma will surely lose its A-licence, because it failed to qualify to Italian playoffs twice in a row…
The A licence will be changed to the 9th B licence, because the leading teams each have problems – UNICS and Khimki have too small arena, and Valencia would mean 5th Spanish team with A licence (though they certainly deserve it much more than Unicaja…)
So, both Lietuvos Rytas and Besiktas will get a B licence.
Then the C licence wildcard will go UNICS (thanks to their good performance in this year’s EL and Russian lobbying), while one qualifying tourny wildcard will go to Valencia (who will be the favorites to win it).

Though I must admit it’s tricky regarding arenas: Siena, Prokom and CSKA arenas are too small (the latter 2 way too small), yet I’m pretty sure Siena and CSKA won’t lose their A-licence in near future because of that.
So they may relax or even scrap the Arena requirement, which could let a new A-licence go to Unics…

Prokom is moving to an 11,500 seat arena next year. CSKA is moving to a 14,500 seat arena next year. So the arena issue won’t affect whether or not they keep an A license.

The 10,000 arena requirement is not being scrapped. All of the teams with the liscence, except Siena will play in 10,000 play arenas next year.

Barca is also moving to Sant Jordi, which seats 17,000 for basketball, until their new arena is ready in a few years.

Siena does have an arena issue. But it is the only club that does.

OS Davis, please remove the lies and false claims made by “Aleksandar Zoran”. That sort of thing should not be permitted here.

I think Turkish Airlines Eurolegue will also consider Galatasaray Medical Park as a strong wild card candidate despite their semi-final elimination in the hands of Besiktas Milangaz. They had a really solid debut season in EL, as they came through the qualifiers, eliminating the more experienced Asvel and the hosts Lietuvos Rytas along the way. They just missed out on the Final 8 in the last game of the Top 16 Group Stage, by losing out to the eventual champions Olympiacos SFP. They were the very first team in the competition to defeat CSKA, and have a huge fanbase -played their home games in Abdi Ipekci Arena with an average attendance of 10,360- which is always favoured by the Euroleague authorities. Four teams from Turkey may sound odd, but it may well be given a go
