Zalgiris ends a nearly two year losing streak

December 19, 2007

Maybe you saw Zalgiris Kaunas winning tonight in Poland against Prokom Trefl. You may think that this was nothing special. Well it was a really big thing for the Green team from Kaunas.

In fact, it was the first win on the road in Euroleague for Zalgiris since the 2nd February 2006 where they won in Strasbourg. Yes, Strasbourg was a Euroleague team once. And how big their relief is shows the reactions I got from my Lithuanian friends after the game. “Finally!” or “at last” were their first words.

But it was however quite a huge challenge for the team of Rimantas Grigas as Sopot went up early in the game with some three point shots from Milan Gurovic. But the team found its way back into the game to lose concentration again at the end. But it was enough for a first win on the road 85-80 after nearly two years.
