Got the vitriol brewing? All right, then, with BallinEurope now caught up on some preseason basketball viewing, it’s time for another edition of BiE’s Official Euroleague Power Rankings. Just one quick note for irritated fans (we’re looking at you, Olympiacos, Žalgiris and Lietuvos Rytas backers): Remember that these rankings are first totally subjective and secondly are based on *trending*, not necessarily where BiE believes the teams will finish when all’s said and done. FMP Belgrade news: Đurović out, local hero Djokic in, no more foreign players

Talk about your sudden gearshifts. As FMP Belgrade prepares for the Eurochallenge quarterfinal round, the club and FIBA today announced that coach Vlade Đurović has been ousted from the team, sacking effective immediately. Bosko Djokic, who had served as BC FMP previously and was employed for 2009-10 at Radnički Basket, was named as Đurović’s replacement.

Despite FMP’s decent Eurochallenge run thus far, the team has managed to go just 9-16 in Adriatic League play and sits in 12th place, two games behind – oh, sweet irony! – Radnički.

Reportedly, the move was due mainly to economics, with club officials explaining that they had been “forced to reduce the current budget and that [the team] will continue only with players from the domestic pool and not with reinforcements from abroad.” In this light, the decision makes some sense, since FMP holds a comfortable four-game lead over NLB relegation-zone teams Bosna and Helios.

Happy birthday, Svetislav Pešić!

Today marks the 60th birthday of Svetislav Pešić, coach extraordinaire last with Red Star Belgrade.

After nearly a decade and a half playing the game (culminating in his late-career win with the European Champions Cup winner KK Bosna in 1978/79), Pešić has gone on to rack up an impressive number of accolades and successes in professional leagues and international competition.

Upon Pešić’s mantelpiece are trophies including four consecutive Bundesliga Basketball League titles with Alba Berlin from 1997-2000; a Korać Cup (won in 1995 with Berlin); two German national cups (1997 and 1999, both with Berlin); an ACB championship (2004, with FC Barcelona); a EuroCup (2007, with Dynamo Moscow); and, at center, the Euroleague/ACB/Copa del Rey triple crown won with Barcelona in 2003.
