Childress' choice: Atlanta Hawks to make qualifying offer

May 13, 2010

Start worrying, Olympiacos fans. Atlanta Hawks-centric TrueHoop Network blog Hoopinion this morning confirms that the Birds will indeed make a $4.8 million qualifying offer to Josh Childress, which would allow the team to hold the current Red’s NBA rights, should he choose to return to the league but not Atlanta.

On Childress’ part, the Yank-made-good-in-Europe has stated that he will make his decision by July 15, the deadline for free-agency filing. Childress can stay with Olympiacos in 2010-11 in what would be an option year and the final of his three-year deal with Olympiacos.

Childress has implied he’d be enticed to stay with Olympiacos if they took the Euroleague title, but that didn’t happen. Of course, if anyone had a far more disappointing playoff run than the Reds, it was the Hawks … and unlike Olympiacos, Atlanta definitely faces an unknown future in terms of 2010-11 personnel.

Childress is making in Greece what would equal to $13 million in the NBA. Unless he suddenly became stupid he is not leaving Greece.
