D(irk) Day in Germany: Footage from Nowitzki’s homecoming in Würzburg

June 29, 2011

Yesterday, Würzburg, Germany, celebrated its favorite son and probably the greatest athlete the town has ever produced as Dirk Nowitzki finally returned home, some 2½ weeks after his Dallas Mavericks captured the 2011 NBA championship title.

Nattily attired in a Maverick-green T-shirt bearing the Nike logo, Dirk spent a decent part of the day in a one-man motorcade, driving through the streets of Würzburg accompanied by not-the-Dallas Mavericks cheerleaders, or simply walking, to the adulation of a sizable fraction of the town’s 130,000-plus residents.

Nowitzki did the obligatory press conference thing as well and signed many an autograph. The biggest photo opportunity came in the big man’s signing of Wurzburg’s “Golden Book,” typically an honor reserved for those in the political sphere.

Some non-Dirk activities also went down. Das pyro rock und roll!

For a solid 60 minutes or so more, check out the six YouTubes’ worth of stuff posted by user HerrWerder beginning here.

Finally, and for no good reason at all, one more look Nowitzki’s departing shot in Texas. For those of you not into other American sports, the game is baseball and Dirk, well, he’s not really doing it right. (Of course, he does look a little better than John Wall…)
