Rumor du jour: Joey Dorsey to leave Olympiacos for NBA

October 26, 2012

The rumor’s starting to burgeon on Twitter. In just a few minutes (2pm CET, to be precise), go reports and say sources, officials of Euroleague champions Olympiacos are to announce that the former University of Memphis/Caja Laboral Baskonia big man Joey Dorsey will be released from his €2 million contract with . Further, others say that Dorsey has in fact received an offer from an NBA club, so let’s begin the speculation and Officially Fearlessly Predict™ it’s … the Dallas Mavericks…

Dorsey has been cut from several teams over character issues. If he keeps this up he won’t be getting any more offers.

If it really is the Mavericks, that’s pretty pathetic to go from Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood to Eddy Curry and Joey Dorsey in the span of two seasons.

I hate to break it to you, but he’s just a bit part minor role player on Olympiacos.

      2011-12 season:

14 minutes per game – 4 points per game – 4 rebounds per game

      2012-13 season:

13 minutes per game – 3 points per game – 3 rebounds per game

Link for proof, since crazy lying a-holes like Gabe, Phileus, and mike spam this forum and will claim this is a lie:

      http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?pcode=003508&clubcode=OLY

NBA fans always make up these alternate reality fantasy worlds and these fake and totally imagined myths about how every single NBA player (especially Americans) “dominates” in Europe.

When truth is that most of them are just average players at best. Many are even scrubs.

Joey Dorsey was nothing but a small bit role player on Olympiacos. Hardly near anything close to how NBA fans claim. They call him “Dwight Howard of Euroleague”, when he was more like a 10-15 minute a game guy used to make some fouls and play some defense and that was it.

He averaged 12 minutes with the Raptors in 2010-11, 14 minutes with Olympiacos in 2011-12, and 13 minutes with Olympiacos in 2012-13.

You are just completely imagining, like all NBA only fans do, because they suffer from a severe mental disorder.

Okay, again. An NBA game is 48 minutes while a Euroleague game only 40 so 14 minutes with a Euroleague team means a lot more than 12 with an NBA team. But also with Toronto he was a “role” player on a 23-43 team and with Olympiacos he was a “role” player on the Euroleague champions, a little different if you ask me.

I’m pretty sure by “nice gig” Vincent meant Dorsey had stability, better pay than he had in the NBA (where he’ll probably get the vet minimum at this point) to play in fewer games, and a chance to play an important role on an important team.

I don’t think anyone in the world has mistaken Dorsey for Dwight Howard. Dorsey was the same player in the NBA as he was in Memphis: a player with almost non-existent offensive polish who’s a smart low-post and PNR player but unfortunately not an elite rebounder for his position and, it seemed to me, a little bit on the fat side. Sounds like he was pretty much the same in the Euroleague last season: http://www.euroleague.net/final-four/istanbul-2012/main-page/i/97866/7002/tribute-to-the-champs-olympiacos-joey-dorsey

Also, LOL at telling Vincent he has mental issues for saying Dorsey had a nice gig at Olympiacos. Okay sure, I guess it was his misfortune to play for such a team? 😛

What is always with this “less games” crap every time some NBA fan mentions Euroleague? Olympiacos is scheduled for 72 games this year according to what their coach said in the article about Dorsey leaving the team.

It’s really odd how NBA fans harp on this whole “less games in Europe” thing. I don’t really think 10 games makes that much of a difference. But to hear NBA fans talk about it is like a whole different world in terms of the difference in games.

Including HEBA and Euroleague playoffs/finals, Olympiacos still played only around 70 games last season. The NBA regular season is 82 games, plus a maximum of 28 playoff games for a potential total of 120.

What I meant was why leave a team where he is making good money, has a nice role, and has some stability on a leading European side?

    ——————————————————————

    1. Only about half of NBA teams make the playoffs. The Euroleague teams are all bound to playing those amounts of games.

    2. No NBA team ever plays 28 playoff games, and no NBA team ever played 120 games.

    3. Actually, several Euroleague teams can play about 80 games a year.

    4. You forgot to count cup games. Euroleague teams don’t just play their national league and the Euroleague. They also play their national cup. You forgot to figure that in. They play in 3 competitions.

    5. NBA teams only play 8 preseason games. Euroleague teams play between 12-16 preseason games.

    6. The European season is longer for Euroleague teams than it is for NBA teams, especially NBA teams that don’t make the playoffs.

    7. Euroleague teams practice twice a day on non game and non travel days. NBA teams usually practice about 3-4 times a month on average, and it’s not unusual for them to practice once or twice in a month.

    8. Using your comparison of Joey Dorsey playing “less” on Olympiakos than in the NBA is totally wrong and incorrect. It is simply not true. As an example, Josh Childress said that because Euroleague teams practice so much more than NBA teams, and play in 3 competitions, that actually, he played more basketball with Olympiakos than he did in the NBA, and that playing in Olympiakos was more tiring than an NBA schedule.

    9. NBA fans don’t know what they are talking about when they talk about how Euroleague team play so much “less”. With he extreme difference in amount of practices alone, a Euroleague schedule is more demanding than an NBA one.

As many others here say, you state things as absolute fact, without even knowing the actual truth, and that what you are saying is actually wrong.

Thank you for taking the time to write a reasonable response instead of just saying “omg trolls” as we’re used to 😉

I’m not convinced by your comparison of the number of games. Basically you’re saying the top Euroleague teams will play, at maximum, around 80 games (and far less than that for teams cut out of the top 16), whereas over half the NBA (i.e. teams that make the playoffs) will play more than that. Basically, it’s still accurate to say that the average NBA team will play at least 10 – 20% more games than the average Euroleague team, and of course with games that are 20% longer that will take a higher toll on the players, as well.

Your point about practice is definitely valid though, especially since a lot of the more spoiled American players who went abroad during the lockout complained about the number (and nature) of the practices in Europe. This is a more valid counterargument than the number of games played, especisally since it affects players’ lifestyles in a way that is probably as significant as additional games. So I get your point 🙂

Dorsey has some kind of mental issues. He has had many problems before in his previous teams with attitude and behavior. This is nothing new. If he had a normal attitude he would have still been playing for the Rockets. He would not last in Olympiacos or any other team because of his attitude.

Here it explains everything about the situation with Dorsey –

    http://www.redplanet.gr/Editorial/psinopoulos/o-ntorsei-kai-o-antikatastaths-toy.1987494.html

No team can allow someone with such behaviors to stay on their team. That is just not acceptable behavior. But it should not be a surprise, because the Kings also cut him for behavior reasons.

Yes as that article, in this article in English explains,
      http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2012/10/28/3565910/plenty-of-questions-surrounding-dorseys-reported-departure-from

It’s not like Dorsey was cut because of his skill. It seems to be mutual agreement (like Odom in Dallas last year) where Dorsey no longer wanted to play for Olympiacos.

      ReplyCancel
  14. Nikos

Dorsey was a part of the first Olympiacos team to win a title in Euroleague and Greek League in 15 years. So Olympiacos fans will always remember him I am sure.

Anyway, I read in Greek media that already players like Ike Diogu, Troy Murhpy, Mehmet Okur, and Chris Anderson have asked Olympiacos to sign them. So I am sure they can find a replacement.

That is if they have any interest in any of those players. Anderson and Diogu supposedly already tried to sign their this summer and Olympiacos was not interested. And the Olympiacos coach said that they would only sign players with a good reputation in character. So Chris Anderson should automatically be out.

Plus Diogu is a PF, not a C. So probably out for him. Okur has bad knees and also supposedly Real Madrid wants him. So maybe that means Troy Murphy will be Dorsey’s replacement.

I think Mavroeidis is very underrated as a player. Maybe they should just let him get more playing time. He was starting center on the second best team in the Spanish League, so it’s not like he is some scrub or something.

Hahaha. Diogu is horrible and, sadly, Okur is basically a mummy now. Murphy is interesting though. HAs Murphy ever played in Europe? He’s an above-average rebounder and has been a great shooter even since college, though he really only got to show that off when he was in Indiana. I’m surprised nobody in the NBA is offering him a vet minimum, but then again his defense is spotty and he’s getting older. He’s also a solid stretch-the-floor PF but I’ve never seen him get significant center minutes, probably because he couldn’t really defend strong centers.

His whole career has been a series of disappointments and conditioning issues. He could have been a beast, I remember peopel even throwing around Barkley comparisons when he was drafted, and now he has a snowflake’s chance of hell of ever playing in the league (unless he dominates D-League again). He plays well against inferior competition, but he’s not NBA-level anymore and he never, ever came close to the potential so many teams saw in him.

Btw, in terms of career-arc, not skills/talent/etc., I really think what we’re seeing with Anthony Randolph reflects what happened with Diogu.

Yeah I guess you’re right. I was just looking at how Diogu played in the Olympic qualifying tournament getting Nigeria into the Olympics for the first time ever and eliminating Greece and Dominican Republic (with Horford). But yes it was against weaker level competition and still more importantly, it was only for one short tournament. As shown with Greece and Spanoulis in 2006, winning an upset in a FIBA tournament is easier than building a career in the NBA where day in and day out you have to compete against the best in the world.

            ReplyCancel

Diogu was reported this summer to have asked to play with Euroleague clubs Barca, Malaga, Panathinaikos, and Siena and none of them signed him. So whatever he was doing over the summer was evidently not impressing any of those teams.

Not saying he is a bad player, as I don’t really know. All I saw was him in the Olympic qualification where he played good, but his team only won purely by the refs and 100% the game against Greece was rigged. Then in Olympics where he played OK.

So you count a lot of victories for his team that never should have happened if not for ref interference.

Anyway, the name of Diogu was put out as he requested to play for Olympiacos, not that they asked him to. They said all of these players requested to play for them. Olympiacos simply says it will due background and scouting on all of them before they decide.

I really don’t know how you can claim a game where Greece was called for 5 less fouls and took 8 more free throws 100% rigged. I mean I see how you can disagree with the calls and non-calls at the end but Greece shot 60.7% (17/28) on their free throws while Nigeria shot 90% (18/20). Was that the refs doing. If Greece hit one more free throw it would have been an overtime game, 2 more and they would have won. Greece was out rebounded by 10, 28-38 including being out rebounded by 11 on the offensive end 6-17. Were those 17 offensive rebounds by Nigeria 100% rigged by the refs?

If the game really was 100% rigged wouldn’t Nigeria have gotten called for less fouls and given more free throws then Greece? They must have been the best rigging refs in the history of basketball in calling 5 less fouls on Greece and giving them 8 more free throws yet knowing that they would shot 60% from the free throw line and give up 17 offensive rebounds.

BTW in that game Diogu had 17/12, out rebounding Bourousis by 7. How can refs fix rebounds?

About Diogu, Greek media reported that Olympiacos did not accept his proposal to sign with them.

They said Chris Anderson was denied his request also. The reasons given were:

    Anderson – character issues

    Diogu – can’t play defense

Of course, Gabe will continue to troll here and claim that Diogu “dominated inferior Greek players”.

So true, that this “dominant” player is not even wanted by those “inferior Greeks”, even when he OFFERS them his services.

Those refs must be the best fixing refs ever!!! Why are they reffing some low league Olympic qualifying game between Greece and Nigeria? They should be fixing games with millions of dollars of betting money on the line like the NBA finals where they can call more fouls on a team and give them less free throws but still fix it so they win.

Amazing. They can also magically make the team they are fixing to lose miss free throws and look like old women on the boards. Wow! The best fixing refs ever!!

BallinEurope.com was founded in September 2007 by Christophe Ney (who now runs the excellent scouting-themed website European Prospects) and Tobias Seitz, both then bloggers for FIBA.com with over 10 years’ worth of experience in the professional basketball world each. The mission then was to “provide a very unique perspective of Basketball in and about Europe.”
