Messina, Madrid to Garbajosa: You’re free to leave (perhaps to Unicaja, Cajasol or Lagun Aro)

January 26, 2011

Forced to make roster moves with the arrival of Mirza Begic, Real Madrid coach Ettore Messina yesterday placed former Toronto Raptor forward Jorge Garbajosa on the transfer list

This morning, Spanish sports news outlets are abuzz with the news that at least three serious ACB suitors have stepped forward to express interest in obtaining Garbajosa: Unicaja Malaga, Cajasol Sevilla and Lagun Aro.

Since returning to Spain in 2009 after a stint with BC Khimki Moscow region, Garbajosa has been on something of a statistical decline. In 2009-10, he maintained respectable per-game numbers of 8.2 points and 4.0 rebounds in Euroleague play, but managed lines of just 6.7 ppg and 3.1 rpg in the ACB that season. This season, Garbajosa has managed just 3.9 ppg and 1.7 rpg in ACB games, plus recently registering two DNPs.

Is a return to the NBA in Garbajosa’s future. No, really, the Raps could definitely probably use any rebounders they can get at this point, n’est-ce pas?

The real competition was between Garba and rising star Nikola Mirotic.. both power forward with 3point skills

If you look at the ID ..but moreover if you look at Nikola latest performance.. I think no one can blame coach Messina for this decision.

Ask Siena fans if you still have some doubt! 😉

At the beginning of the season I was shocked about that… and I’m still not convinced…

I think Messina is still convinced that Novica can play at 3 ..so he’s training him and giving him time to learn. He’s aware that it needs time to learn to play in a different role.

He has in the roster a pure shooting guard (Tucker), the quickest sprinter with strong defence and shooting skill (Llull), but he needs a tall in/out with shooting skill and ability to mismatch back to the basket (ok… Suarez is that kind of player as well.. better to have 2, just in case).

Moreover the frontcourt is already a little bit crowded with D’Or, Felipe, Begic, Mirotic and Tomic.. and among those Novica is the only one who can play at 3.

I’m doubtfull as you are that Messina is right on Novica… but Ettore is still convinced about that.. otherwise Velickovic would be alreay traded.

Time will answer.. We will see!
