Plan Y for Team Lithuania (plus Official Fearless Predictions™)

July 31, 2012

BallinEurope’s Lithuanian agent Skyped BiE today with two words on his mind: “Lithuania’s doom.”

“Today?” BiE countered.

“No, it already happened two days ago,” said Y. and he was off with a prescient, simple formula for success after the 23-point blowout at the hands of Argentina.

“As Lithuania, you simply do not lose by 20+, unless it better damn well be USA.”

“Maybe Argentina is that good?” countered BiE.

“Their execution was seriously impressive, with perfect ball movement, passing … but that’s probably because of poor Lithuanian defense. On pick-and-rolls, we tried to double the ball handler. They moved it to Luis Scola and then onwards shooters. Our defensive switches were too slow, and too many LTU turnovers turned into easy points.

“I have to say PG looks like the weakest or second-weakest position for us, but it’s all connected with Robertas Javtokas out. Lithuania had to play Jonas Valančiūnas- Mantas Kalnietis and Darius Songaila-Sarunas Jasikevičius duos. JV-Šarūnas only made one pick-and-roll and if you remember last year [at Eurobasket 2011], they did it numerous times. With no decent rebounding, Kalnietis was not good, not able to run the floor, and struggling in a slow offense, forcing Šaras to play more than usual [19 minutes], and he probably got tired and collected numerous turnovers [four of Lithuania’s total 16].

“It was poor coaching, I hope [Kestutis Kemzura] can make adjustments – he was in a panic against Argentina. You have to start Šaras and Valančiūnas together then, as Jonas gets his quick fouls, roll in Kalnietis with Paulius Jankūnas, Linas Kleiza, and Jonas Mačiulis at the top 3 positions just to facilitate rebounding.

“See, also, two days ago since we had to play Sarunas so much, we lost an opportunity to do what we should have done throughout most of the game: pressure Prigioni full court. He’s like, 34 [Actually he turned 35 in mid-May –Ed.] i think, and Argentina does not have good 2s to run the offense.”
And today against Nigeria?

“Lithuania has to collect their composure. Nigeria is no easy pie, as strange as it sounds. I think Lithuania wins by ~15 points – there’s simply too much LTU can do better. I’m sticking with my quarterfinal loss prediction, whether 3rd or 4th seeded.

“The problem is … Lithuania was never a great adjustment team. When they were winning, they would come in and roll everyone from start. When they sucked, they did so throughout.”

Right, then. BallinEurope’s Official Fearless Prediction™ for Lithuania-Nigeria has Lietuva by 15 points.

Meanwhile, in that hyped first-ever meeting between San Antonio greats Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker>, BiE’s already hedged with Les Bleus, so let’s say Parker’s gang wins by three in OT in today’s upset special.

BiE also has bookmakers’ odds-on favorites Spain (with minus-13 handicap) against Australia in the Marc Gasol Revenge Game; Russia (minus-14) against China; and Brazil (minus-12) against Britain covering the pointspreads.

The line on the USA-Tunisia game is a ridiculous +56 to the African side, so your guess on the New Dream Team covering is as good as BiE’s; who decides exactly 56 points, as opposed to 55 or 57 or even 56.5, say? The prognostication of course is USA in a romp.

Y. is BallinEurope’s ace-in-the-hole, the man-in-the-know in hoops-mad Lithuania. Though a sporadic contributor to the website, Y.’s straight dope, input sharp opinion and tales of Mad Vlad are invaluable to BiE.

So am my still crazy for calling Argentina a top three team in the world. Not only did they lose to the US by only 6 in a friendly but they just beat Lithuania (who placed 5th in Eurobasket) by 23 points. The only teams stronger are the US (of course) and Spain. Let’s see how they do against Eurobasket’s sliver medalist France today.

These Euro nuts won’t be happy ’till Lithuania or Greece is pounded by 50 points by the US or Argentina. And even then, they will say the tournament is a scrub anyway so Greece didn’t really care. If only the refs didn’t rig the Nigeria- Greece game, billy would have shown Manu and the gang that they are old and has beens.

If only billy Greece made it’s free throws, the poor FIBA refs wouldn’t have mattered.

You probably know the words to this song by now. Spain wins with huge efforts from both Pau Gasol and Marc Gasol. The defending champions have been doing it like this for a while now and certainly since this EuroBasket competition began. Marc scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed five rebounds while Pau rang up 19 and seven against Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman. Nowitzki matched Pau’s 19 and 7 and Kaman chipped in with 15 and 12.

What exactly makes someone a Euro nut? The belief that the 12 teams currently in the olympics do not represent the best 12 teams in the world? The desire to have the 12 best teams in the world regardless of what continent they are from? I don’t have any preference to see European teams (except for Lithuania who I root for) nor would i make any guarantee of european teams winning every olympic spot, particularly in the future. What i do have a preference for is to see every team with an equal shot, and nobody with an easier road than anybody else.

It’s impossible to eliminate regional tournaments completely because it would not be feasible to allow every team in the world to compete at a competition. A weeding out process of lesser teams has to take place, and there’s no reason it shouldn’t start at a regional level (although i do object to Oceania being it’s own region, Australia and New Zealand need to be put into another region. Asia makes the most sense geographically, but it doesn’t matter to me.) But that doesn’t mean that places in the olympics have to be given out by regional tournament. What’s wrong with the idea of giving out only places to the Olympic qualifying tournament? Why not make they Olympic qualifying tournament bigger, 24 teams, maybe more. Any Olympic spots should be given out based on world wide competition, either from the previous olympics, or the world championship. Say any teams that win medals at either event get an automatic ticket to the next olympics (plus the next world championship.) All left over spots would be awarded based on a play in tournament.

If you really believe that other continents are, or are becoming, much stronger this should appeal to you, it will give them a chance to demonstrate their abilities. I believe there would be more European teams to make the olympics, but i would not be unhappy or disappointed to be proven wrong, I would simply like to opportunity to have it proven on the basketball court.

I will point out as a side note that it worked out very well for Lithuania. They barely made it the qualifying tournament, I would suggest only because of the home field advantage of having Eurobasket hosted in Lithuania. But once they got there the qualifying tournament was full of mediocre/bad teams so they managed to make it to they olympics. And on top of that there are enough bad teams in the olympics that they are now very likely to make it to the quarterfinals at least. So despite having indisputably the worst team in its history (and maybe not one of the 12 best teams in the world itself) Lithuania will make it at least to the quarterfinals and if they can pull out a great game or two, maybe further. But i would rather see Lithuania not make it to the Olympics, or miss out on the quarterfinals in a stronger olympic field, than see them advance in the olympics against fake competition.

Fake competition? Since Argentina beat Lithuania and Brazil is 2-0 I assume you must be referring to Great Britain (the host country), China (Asia champs), Australia (Oceania champs) and the two African teams.

First off I don’t feel this is a fake competition. FYR of Macedonia was 4th place in Eurobasket yet they couldn’t advance out of the Olympic qualifier. There is no way they would place 4th in the Olympics! And Nigeria, which was a bronze medal winner in the African Championships eliminated Greece which placed 6th in Eurobasket.

But I do see where you’re coming from. Oceania only has two teams so Australia makes every Olympics and Asia is so weak that China makes every Olympics. I think a good solution would be to combine Oceania and Asia and put the Middle Eastern Asian teams in the African division. That would make every zone stronger and make China and Australia fight it out for the automatic spot instead of having both teams in every Olympics.

But you also have to realize that both FYR of Macedonia (4th place in Eurobasket) and Greece (6th place in Eurobasket) had the chance to advance to the Olympics but instead Nigeria (3rd place in African championship) took the last spot.

LG, I actually understand what you’re saying and wouldn’t be opposed to proposals that would include better teams, and no, I don’t think you’re one of the Euro nuts. If you read the other violent comments on this site, you will know who they are.

But let’s not denigrate the Olympics just because not ALL of the other good teams are here. Those are the rules as it was setup before, and everyone knew them, and so it is fair.
As we say here in the US, it is what it is.

i do realize that, and i’m happy for Nigeria, i always root for the underdog (unless my team is playing,) that’s why I root for Lithuania, but that doesn’t mean that i think the competition is fair.

It was not my intention to suggestion that specific teams were fake (although i would agree with the list you put forward.) but rather that the competition itself is fake because Australia only has to beat 1 team to make it to the olympics. If they beat New Zealand they are in, that’s it. China has to beat who else in Asia to win? In the Americas there are giants like the US and Argentina blocking the way, in europe spain/france (not to mention brazil and russia.) It makes it very very difficult for other teams in the Americas/Europe to qualify, or even get a chance. Slovenia lost Lithuania by 3 points in the consolation game, after losing to Russia by a point earlier on to force a quarter final against Spain. And so they are out of the olympics. Would they have won a spot in a qualifying tournament, i don’t know, maybe, maybe not. Maybe they lose another close game because they cannot close it out in crunch time. I just would like to see them have the chance. And if they lose and Nigeria advance, great.

I hear claims that the rest of the world has caught up, that Europe is no longer as powerful as it once was. If you’re so confident why can’t we determined on the field. Why can’t we have European teams play African teams for the right to go to they Olympics? I wouldn’t be at all shocked if there were no European teams on the podium this year. The podium could go completely to the Americas with the US/Argentina/Brazil. Nor would I be shocked if Argentina/Brazil fail to make it to the Semi-finals at all. I’m not trying to pick 1 continent over the other, I just don’t want to see automatic bids handed by region. Nor is the answer to try to rearrange regions more fairly, because you cannot predict ahead of time which regions may be stronger or weaker.

As far as Macedonia, I do not believe they are a good team, they came out of nowhere to have 1 good competition when nobody was ready for them and hadn’t scouted any of their players. It happens often in sports. Someone has a big breakthrough, people begin to prepare for them more, and they fall back down to earth. It was a nice story for them, but it doesn’t mean they are a great team or one of the better teams in Europe. Turkey took silver in the World Championships in 2010, now they are out of the Olympics. The same is true of Nigeria this year. They beat Lithuania when Lithuania wasn’t expecting anything, and beat a Greece team that probably took victory for granted. But when the game really mattered in the Olympics, Lithuania demolished them, and suspect France, Argentina, and the US will too. I’m glad for Nigeria to be the first African team to make it through qualifying, but that act doesn’t justify a system that puts athletes on unequal settings to make the olympic games.

But going into the competition, the teams knew what they had to do. They didn’t do it in their regional areas so didn’t make it. The only one that seems to be really unfair is region with the Aussies and NZ. Shouldn’t they be in the Asia group? It would make for better competition in the Asian group plus the Aussies and NZ would get better comp to prepare also.

The fact that you are told ahead of time about an unfair competition doesn’t make it fair. What if they had similar rules for other competitions? What if they only took only 100 one meter runners, or 12 100 meter breast stroke swimmers, and they required that there’s at least one from every region? Would that also be fair? I realize they just did something similar in women’s gymnastics by not allowing the 4rth place finisher into the finals because 2 of her team mates already made it. They only allow 2 girls from the same country to compete, so now the fourth place finisher and reigning world champion is kicked out. I think that is even more outrageous.

I still have not read a single specific objection to my suggestion that teams be given only spots in a qualifying tournament and that any direct invitations be based on success in world wide competitions (the Olympics/ World Championships.) There are a lot of people defending the strength of the basketball in some of these weaker basketball continents or like you saying everyone knew what they had to do ahead of time. So what? Do you actually think this system is better? If so, why?

Nigeria’s coach told the media they lost the game against Lithuania because the refs wanted them to lose and helped Lithuania win the game.

Yes, the SAME Nigeria team that is only in the Olympics because the refs helped them get there.

Mentally deranged? lol You’re funny. Who’s to say 50-50? Whose to say two blown calls? It’s all opinion. The point is the Greece coach whined and complained when his team lost so you can’t be surprised when the coach of the team that beat him, instead of hearing congratulations and sportsmanship, had to hear the crying of a 12 year old girl, follows suit when he loses.

Message to: Americans mike, Gabe, and Phileus

    From Australia:

Greece didn’t get just one bad call. They 4-5 HORRIBLE calls called against them in the last 2-3 minutes of the game. 2 in the last 3 seconds. Why were they down 1 with 3 seconds to go?

Because Dagunduro did a clear offensive foul and instead of the refs calling him for it, they sent him to the free throw line. Otherwise, Greece should have been leading by 3 points with 3 seconds left.

You sound like petulant little spoiled brats the way you keep trash talking and ridiculing people over that Greece vs. Nigeria game. I am Australian and I was watching that game online and I was absolutely stunned at how the refs stole that game for the Nigerian team.

It was one of the most clearly rigged games I’ve seen in my life. It was like watching the 2002 NBA WCFs of Lakers against Kings all over again. I really think you need to shut up and quit bashing people that complain about that game.

Because the refs rigged it without question. Hell, there was an 8 second violation by Nigeria at the end of the game and the refs didn’t even call it. Nigeria got the ball over the line one on possession towards the very end of the game at the 12 second mark. 12 seconds on the shot clock and the refs didn’t even call the 8 second violation. This cannot happen unless there is a purposely done game rigging by the refs.

I really wonder what the hell is wrong with people like you three. You come here telling everyone that you are basketball fans, yet you are absolutely giddy, tickled, thrilled, and happy when one of the elite teams of world basketball gets blatantly stolen of the Olympics by the refs.

So instead we get to see one more scrub team like Nigeria competing. Between the hosts GB, China, Tunisia, and Nigeria we have 4 awful scrub teams to watch. Then we have my Aussie team, which isn’t a scrub team, but still is definitely below the European teams like Greece in quality.

I am sorry but I agree with the Euros here about you two. You are definitely NOT basketball fans. You are trolls. Because you obviously do NOT care about basketball at all. You are just coming here to attack and criticize Europeans on a daily basis.

I don’t know what your malfunction is, but you definitely act like ugly Americans on a daily basis here. Any REAL and actual basketball fan would be furious that FIBA refs are intentionally knocking good teams out of the Olympics and making the already extremely watered down tournament even weaker. To the point even of being practically unwatchable in the early stage.

USA versus Nigeria, Lithuania versus Nigeria, GREAT! What wonderful games to watch such a terrible team like Nigeria. Can’t imagine why any Euro nuts as you call them would have rather seen Greece instead.

Since naturally anyone thinking that is both Euro and nuts according to freaks like you. Also I really find it hypocritical that yanks are saying no one should complain about the refs to the Greeks that visit here.

Yanks are STILL complaining about the 1972 Olympic final, and that was a case where the refs didn’t actually help the Soviets, according to EVERYONE from outside the USA. Yanks are STILL bitching about that game and claiming the refs stole it from them, even though after numerous independent reviews FIBA has always claimed the refs did nothing to help the Soviets, and in fact actually helped the US.

Compare that to this Greece – Nigeria game that you bloody ugly Americans keep telling Greeks to shut up about it. FIBA reviewed the game and almost immediately sent a letter of apology to Greece’s federation and admitted the refs blew the game with bad calls at the end.

So, for a couple weeks some Greeks were naturally and understandably upset over the refs taking away their Olympics place, and you are here cussing them, telling them off, calling them crazy, making fun of them, etc. But you Americans are still going on about a game that happened 40 years ago and where no one from outside the USA has ever believed the refs actually blew the game.

Your own precious Coach K bitched about the 1972 Olympic final to the media just 2 years ago, and here you are openly trashing the Greek coach in this website for being mad that the refs screwed his team over.

You know what you are? I will tell you what you are. You are,

    HYPOCRITES

    HUGE HYPOCRITES

    SICKENINGLY HUGE HYPOCRITES

Here we are even today with you calling Euro people nuts and telling them off over this and having the guts to call them trolls. I just want to vomit every time I have to read this idiocy from you fools. PLEASE just stop it.

You are either 10 years old, racist (as some others say), or you are psychos. I don’t know which, but just stop it. I assure you that many people coming to read this site are incredibly sick of you. You are low-life trash and you are destroying the good will of international basketball and making basketball fans from all over the world hate every yank and every NBA fan.

You really are three trashy individuals. I am so sick of reading your filth in this site that I am now actually hoping Team USA loses. I normally root for them, but now I think it would only be justice for them to lose, because it is clear that there is something very wrong with a lot of the NBA fans from the USA.

I could not even use the word arrogant or ignorant, because you three are about 1000 times beyond that. Your trashy comments in this site have made enough bad karma against Team USA to last for a decade.

I am starting to see the Euros are right about Gabe. He’s just trolling.

He keeps saying that minor leagues from around the world are as good as Euroleague because Greece lost to Nigeria.

But when Lithuania, a team made of mostly Euroleague players beat Nigeria – he said nothing. So he is clearly trolling. And I checked Nigeria’s roster and he’s also lying about Nigeria.

Nigeria’s roster has 3 players that played in the NBA. Another 3 that played in the Euroleague, 2 that played in the Eurocup, and 3 that played in the Spanish League.

That’s hardly even remotely close to the false claim that Gabe has been making here. Where he says over and over that Nigeria had one guy that had played in the NBA and the rest all played in NCAA or D-League.

After seeing his clear lie about the USA – Greece average score differential, I decided to start checking up on his claims. Already I see numerous lies he has been telling about Nigeria’s roster, to make it seem much worse than it really was.

And like I said, he keeps claiming this as proof some inferior leagues are better than Euroleague. But Nigeria has 3 guys on the roster that have played in the NBA, some others that weer drafted by the NBA.

They lost to a Lithuanian team mostly made up of Euroleague players. I have not seen one comment from Gabe about how that proves Euroleague is better than the NBA.

But he keeps making this claim that any league in the world is better than Euroleague.

Now that I am checking Gabe’s claims, it seems the Euros that complain about him are telling the truth. The guy is lying on just about everything he says. See Gabe, when you tell so many lies, you will eventually get caught, and when you troll so much, you will eventually get outed.

I went back and checked your claim that Greece was made up of Olympiacos roster. It’s not. Just 1/3 of it was. I also checked your claim that it was the 4 best players of Olympiacos. I looked at the team stats of Olympiacos, and what you said is absolutely a crazy lie and a huge troll that would make even the biggest trolls blush.

Spanoulis is the best Olympiacos player, and Printezis might be the next one, although it’s quite debatable, as he is in the same level of importance to that team, more or less, as several other players. But Mantzaris and Papanikolaou are nothing more than bit part role players, that play a minor role on that team.

So Greece’s team had just the best player of the Euroelague champion, one of the key rotation players, and 2 guys that play a bit part as role players of minor importance.

So, Gabe lied about the makeup of Nigeria’s roster, and the background of its players, then he lied about the makeup of Greece’s team and he lied about the roles of the players on Olympiacos.

That’s enough lies to me to realize Gabe is indeed a liar and a troll and that the Euros here are right about him. if mike and Phileus do not believe this, then I challenge them to check themselves. If they do not, and just make personal attacks and troll posts instead, then I will believe that they are sock puppets of Gabe.

This can all be easily verified by checking the team history of Nigeria’s players and by checking the team stats of Olympiacos in Euroleague last season.

I have been reading here for a long time, and I just am sick of all this trolling and arguing. So I decided to see which group is lying and which one is telling the truth. Because I saw Gabe make a clear lie in another thread.

After just checking a few of Gabe’s claims, I have seen he is lying about virtually everything he says here. So, at this point in time, mike and Phileus are going to have to choose if they want to be outed as sock puppets, or if they want to step up to the plate and admit that Gabe is telling lies here.

I am waiting, and I will be looking over more of Gabe’s claims here, and exposing any more lies.

ABOUT
BallinEurope.com was founded in September 2007 by Christophe Ney (who now runs the excellent scouting-themed website European Prospects) and Tobias Seitz, both then bloggers for FIBA.com with over 10 years’ worth of experience in the professional basketball world each. The mission then was to “provide a very unique perspective of Basketball in and about Europe.”
