Moment of silence for José Luis Abós

October 21, 2014

A moment of silence will be held before all Eurocup games this week to honour the memory of former CAI Zaragoza coach José Luis Abós. We here in BallinEurope would like to extend our sympathies to all associated with the late coach. Here is the full statement from Euroleague:

Euroleague Basketball has declared that a moment of silence be observed before each Eurocup game during this, the second round of the regular season, in memory of the late José Luis Abós, former head coach of CAI Zaragoza. The moments of silence will take place prior to tipoff in courts across the continent to honor Mr. Abós, who died on Monday at age 53.

Euroleague Basketball joins the family of Basket CAI Zaragoza and all of Spanish and European basketball in mourning the loss of Mr. Abós, who was born and raised in Zaragoza and announced in August that he would not be on the bench this season due to a long-term illness. He had been head coach at CAI since 2009 and won the Spanish second division (LEB) with the club in his first season. Since then, the team has been in the first division (ACB). Mr. Abós had started his coaching career as an assistant for Zaragoza in the early 1990s. Mr. Abós led CAI last season in the club’s Eurocup debut.

“It saddens all of us in European basketball to lose, well before his time, someone who loved our sport and gave so much effort to reviving his hometown club in a great basketball city like Zaragoza,” Jordi Bertomeu, President & CEO of Euroleague Basketball, states. “Our deepest condolences are with his family, friends and club at this difficult moment.”
