Update: How to sing along with Olympiacos

May 4, 2010

In reference to yesterday’s post on Euroleague final four fight songs, reader Simos, whose Greek is certainly, like, way better than mine, was kind enough to provide an English translation of the lyrics to “ΘΡΥΛΕ ΤΟΝ ΓΗΠΕΔΩΝ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ” (a.k.a. “Thryle ton gipedon, Olympiake,” a.k.a. “Olympiacos, legend of the courts”).

Words Greek nor English can express BallinEurope’s admiration for Simos’ efforts, so serious kudos to him.

The only question remaining, then, is this. I know that there exist any number of, um, ribald versions of this song for the publicly racier fans to chant, but do Oly’s basketball fans typically substitute anything for the “Santos and Pele” reference? I couldn’t help but notice that “Regal Barcelona,” for example, has the same number of syllables…

Simos’ translation of “Thryle ton gipedon, Olympiake” runs below the break.

ΘΡΥΛΕ ΤΟΝ ΓΗΠΕΔΩΝ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ (Olympiacos, legend of the courts)
ΔΑΦΝΟΣΤΕΦΑΝΩΜΕΝΕ ΜΕΓΑΛΕ ΚΑΙ ΤΡΑΝΕ (Laurel-bearing, great and grand)
ΕΧΕΙΣ ΔΥΝΑΜΗ ΣΟΥ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ (Your power lies)
ΤΟΝ ΠΥΡΙΝΟ ΣΟΥ ΚΟΣΜΟ (In your fiery fans)
ΠΟΥ ΔΕΝ ΛΥΓΑ ΠΟΤΕ (That never succumb)
ΟΛΥΜΠΙ ΟΛΥΜΠΙ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ (Olympi-Olympi-Olympiacos)
ΟΜΑΔΑ ΟΜΑΔΑΡΑ ΜΟΥ (My team, my great team)
ΜΕΓΑΛΗ ΜΟΥ ΑΓΑΠΗ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΑΡΑ ΜΟΥ (My great love, my big Olympiacos)
ΟΛΥΜΠΙ ΟΛΥΜΠΙ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ (Olympi-Olympi-Olympiacos)
ΟΜΑΔΑ ΟΜΑΔΑΡΑ ΜΟΥ (My team, my great team)
ΜΕΓΑΛΗ ΜΟΥ ΑΓΑΠΗ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΑΡΑ ΜΟΥ (My great love, my big Olympiacos)
ΔΟΞΑ ΣΤΑ ΠΑΙΔΙΑ ΣΟΥ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ (Glory to your children)
ΧΙΛΙΟΤΡΑΓΟΥΔΙΣΜΕΝΕ ΣΤΟΝ ΚΟΣΜΟ ΞΑΚΟΥΣΤΕ (Sung by a thousand lips, famous all over the world)
ΤΡΕΜΟΥΝ ΣΤ’ ΑΚΟΥΣΜΑ ΣΟΥ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ (Everyone shivers in fear at the sound of your name)
ΚΙ ΑΚΟΜΑ ΣΕ ΘΥΜΟΥΝΤΑΙ ΟΙ ΣΑΝΤΟΣ ΚΙ Ο ΠΕΛΕ (Santos and Pele remember you still)
ΟΛΥΜΠΙ ΟΛΥΜΠΙ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕ (Olympi-Olympi-Olympiacos)
