Podcast: Talking Greek basketball fandom, Australian post-apocalyptic sport

February 14, 2013

Taking the Charge podcast seriesEpisode no. 22 of the heinnews/BallinEurope co-produced podcast series Taking the Charge is now available online.

This time out, guesting on the show is Aris Barkis of the excellent basketball site Eurohoops.net. While the name indicates that ‘Hoops is not exclusively devoted to the Greek game, David Hein and yours truly nevertheless get Aris to explain a bit about the madness descending unto courtside in the recent Greek Cup finals.

Of particular importance in the interview is Aris’ reminder that such incidents are generally not indicative of Greek basketball fandom as a whole, and that perhaps what’s mostly needed at Olympiacos-Panathinaikos games is German-style security…

Reviewed in this episode in our “Sports Movie of the Week” section is the American/Australian post-apocalyptic sport cult classic The Blood of Heroes, alternatively Salute of the Jugger (1989). In this one, Rutger Hauer stomps about the Outback as a grizzled veteran in a fascinating bloodsport mutated from rugby/American football known only as “The Game.” In the tradition of sports movies, also aboard is a young upstart who sees the game as her (that’s right, her; the post-apocalyptic future generates all sorts of badasses) ticket out of a poor life and into superstardom.

BiE contends that not only is Blood of Heroes compelling, exciting stuff, this film is actually well more unique and insightful that at first glance; tons of elucidation on this matter in the ‘cast.

For this and plenty of banter on all topics basketball, check out the entire podcast here.

@Gabe. I saw your posts with pictures in ISH about the various Greek league basketball stadiums. Were those real? They looked hilariously like high school gyms.

Some of these better Greek players must be embarrassed then to be playing in such low end stadiums or gyms. American Div I schools play in much better environments. It’s somehow surprising but yet it makes sense what with the poor economy in Greece. Poor stadiums and violence during the games– no wonder V-Span said, “who doesn’t want to be in the NBA?”

C’mon V-Span, time for you to test your mettle again in the NBA. Leave your mama behind. LOL

yes… im sure Houston is great during the summer.
which wonderful place in america are you from mike?
maybe if you ask nicely he’ll write you a check for you to buy a ticket to Greece. You know, with his 2,7 million euro salary… Thats the equivalent of what Paul Millsap is making this year. Get a job

Hey @cos, if you can help me out with V-Span it would be great. Tell him to buy me a ticket and I would love to visit Greece. I’m sure it’s a great place with all the ancient structures and all and good food.. I wouldn’t want to go to one of those gyms, though, to watch basketball. Too much risk of violence, and watching the NBA here in the States is a second to none experience.really.

And no, I am not Gabe, and he is not me. Sorry to disappoint you. I grew up in the Philly area suburbs. This is why I am a Sixer fan, but I am an expat living abroad. You happy now?

Yeah, you are just a typical racist jerk from Philly.

For an expat you stay up late… You work the night shift?
By abroad you mean outside the state?
No wonder you had to leave. Philly sucks.
Dont worry though, I’ve already passed on your request for a ticket to Greece and a season ticket to Olympiacos games.

Thanks cos but I will stick to the tour of Greece. No basketball please. ..

Seriously though. Philly is a great sports town and a great basketball town, not necessarily a great NBA town. Many prefer the Big 5 over Sixers basketball. Although the Sixers have produced 2 of the greatest teams in NBA history, the 67 team with Wilt, and the 83 team led by DR.J, Moses, Toney, Bobby Jones, and Maurice Cheeks, who could be inducted to the Hall of Fame soon.

I do get a lot of NBA and international basketball shuttling back and forth here in the Far East.
