Preview – Great Britain vs Italy

September 7, 2022

It’s the eighth day of EuroBasket 2022 and the final day of action in Group C in Milan. The curtain falls on play in the fashion capital as hosts Italy look to head to Berlin on a high note with a win over Great Britain

Where and when?
Mediolanum Forum, Milan, Italy. Tip off: 21.00 CEST, 20.00 BST, 15.00 EST, 12.00 PST

Record to date
Great Britain 0-4 (L vs Ukraine, L vs Croatia, L vs Greece, L vs Estonia)
Italy 2-2 (W vs Estonia, L vs Greece, L vs Ukraine, W vs Croatia)

What do the bookies say?
Italy are basically unbackable at 1/20 while Great Britain are priced at 16/1. The point spread favours Italy by -19.5.

What do we say?
Great Britain have been a complete disaster this tournament and that shows no sign of abating soon. Even assuming the British want to play for pride, it’s not clear they’re capable of delivering anything that could even moderately trouble the Italians.

Italy, for their part, are purely out to keep in tune with this game. The result has no bearing on their final position in the group and they will be mostly motivated to avoid picking up any injuries before they move on to Berlin.

The pick
Even with Italy having little reason to care, I just can’t buy the idea of Britain keeping this close. I’m taking Italy with the points.
