Rudy Fernandez: "My first choice would be to play with Barca and Rubio."

July 13, 2010

Where will Fernandez land?

Though Rudy Fernandez was not dealt on NBA Draft Day and appears to be staying put with his team, it may be that his days with the Portland Trail Blazers are numbered: He has reportedly “fallen out of favor with coach [Nate] McMillan,” Wesley Matthews has joined the Blazers, and Fernandez is now “officially” getting shopped around.

So what’s next for Rudy? Nobody knows and everybody’s waiting.

The chief suitor for Fernandez’ talents would appear to be FC Barcelona. Not only are the Blaugrana apparently waiting to decide on contracts for Gianluca Basile and/or Roger Grimau in the hopes Fernandez might be freed up.

And according to Spanish-language website Sport.es, that’s exactly where Fernandez wants to go: “Rudy and his representatives have commented that his desire is to play on the Blaugrana – next to his friend Ricky Rubio – and that would be his first choice should he decide to leave the NBA.”

(“Rudy ya ha comentado a sus representantes que su deseo es jugar en el equipo blaugrana – al lado de su amigo Ricky Rubio – y ésa sería su primera opción en caso de que decidiera abandonar la NBA.”)

But for now, time is all on the side of Portland. Whereas Trail Blazers management has months before they have to make decisions in trimming the extended roster, Barcelona and most Euroleague teams would like to finalize rosters as soon as possible – particularly Barça, which already has nearly all its spaces solidified very early on.

Other teams showing interest in Fernandez include Olympiacos, Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow and possibly Panathinaikos in the wake of Vassilis Spanoulis’ departure. In the NBA, the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics have been reported as interested in Fernandez, the latter probably even more so since Leandro Barbosa is now presumably off the market.

Olympiacos won’t sign him. He is asking for 2.5 million euros net. Olympiacos said there big signing of the summer was Spanoulis and they will not pay anyone else that kind of money, even players coming from the NBA. Olympiacos had huge disappointments with Childress and Kleiza and they are not going to spend huge amounts on average level NBA players anymore.

Rudy isn’t a player like Linas and Josh, he knows the European game, he’s a worker in defense and his mentally the first is the team.
Josh and Linas cames to Europe only to win money, and they only thogught in their statics, numbers… That was the big problem of they and of Olympiakos too.

Finally, if Rudy decides to play in Barcelona it can be incredible… Ricky-Navarro-Rudy-Lorbek/Morris-Perovic/Vázquez a magic five, maybe it will be a new dinasty in Europe…

    We will see

Panathinaikos offered Rudy a 3 year $18.3 million contract (in NBA terms).

Yes. I think Panathinaikos might just get him based on all the reports.

Rudy is not going to Europe, sorry. He has value in the NBA, and the Blazers know this. If anything he will be traded to another team so that the Blazers can get something in return. He’s a little cry baby though, I remember a couple years ago he was quoted as saying “my dream i s to play in the NBA.” Well Rudy, you’re in the NBA and complaining like a little girl!! Man up and play like you did your rookie year, he could easily be a 6th man of the year in the NBA if he pulled his head out of his Spanish assssss

Most of the Spanish national team players are known for being incessant whiners and complainers. Actually, probably one of the most hated national teams ever. That’s just Rudy’s personality. Nothing you can do about it. Him and Navarro are the worst ones.

Looks like all the NBA fans predictions were wrong once again. I have no idea where on Earth they get this crazy idea that an NBA contract makes a player a slave?

money walks…3 million euro per year is an offer that no NBA team can beat for Rudy…nor Barca or Real. Dont forget that Panathinaiko’s ego is hurt after the “Spanoulis incident” and the president want to make things as before by bringing Rudy to Athens!

Sergio Scariolo who coaches Spain’s national team told the Greek press that when he talked to Rudy on the phone he was told he would play in Europe next year. Looks to me like the NBA fans are again showing their xenophobic nonsense with the “he can’t leave when he has a contract”.

Really? And how does that explain all the players in the NBA that had contracts and left to Europe? Spanoulis for example. How did he do it if it is impossible as the NBA fans say?

Obviously, Rudy Fernandez is doing everything he can to return to Europe. He’s just like Vassilis Spanoulis. He wants absolutely nothing to do with the NBA.
