Spain vs. USA friendly: Five things to watch for

August 22, 2010

The biggest of all this year’s international basketball friendly matches goes down in Madrid tonight at 7pm GMT (9pm CET, 1pm EST) as prospective 2010 FIBA World Championship favorites Spain and USA meet in the first truly serious test for either team.

It’s also a rematch of the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold match of sorts; while Team Spain returns the majority of their surely revenge-seeking squad, Team USA has famously rolled over its entire roster to create a smaller, quicker team contrary stylistically to recent American national teams.

Those of you in countries wherein the game won’t be broadcast (and here BallinEurope basically means nearly every nation in Europe, basically) can watch Spain vs. USA — and Wednesday’s Greece vs. USA game — online for free at FIBA TV. On his part, BiE will be watching for the following items first.

• Andre Iguodala vs. Felipe Reyes. Coach Krzyzewski is sending out his best track-and-field team against Spain today featuring three guards in Chauncey Billups, Kevin Durant, and Rajon Rondo, plus Iguodala, a guy who could play the two spot in the NBA. That means when Team USA’s not running and gunning, Reyes’ll be getting Iggy with it while Tyson Chandler’s hands are full with Marc Gasol. Here’s to thinking we’ll be seeing early…

• …the USA bench, especially Kevin Love. Whether Rajon Rondo, Danny Granger or Russell Westbrook, Team USA has often had its best performer coming off the bench. With mismatches in the frontcourt, BiE’s thinking Lamar Odom sees quality minutes today after leading the Red-White-and-Blues with seven boards against Lithuania. Meanwhile, Love may still be battling Stephen Curry for that 12th spot and number of minutes alone for the former may be the indication of whether he’s staying or not.

• Ricky Rubio. Ah, but you don’t need BiE to remind you that the, perhaps the NBA’s most eagerly anticipated European player since Toni Kukoc, is going today. Anyone in the ‘States who doesn’t recall his performance against the ‘States in that 2008 gold-medal game (six points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in under 29 minutes of play) will get a reminder while the Human YouTube Clip gets to test his skills against three of the best young PGs in the NBA (and thus the world). Do yourselves a favor proactively, Minnesota Timberwolves fans, and stock up on the Kleenex now.

• No-shows for Spain. Though Espana has won eight friendlies in a row, they’ve yet to pay with their full complement left. It appears as though the full roster will be there, but if not it will pay the U.S. to pay attention to what Team Spain *doesn’t* bring.

• Team USA’s chemistry. It’s a bit abstract to watch per se and, as an American, BiE must say that the complete lack of ego-related problems is utterly refreshing (who’d’ve thought Puerto Rico would be the squad producing walk-offs?), Coach K is convinced this is underdeveloped as yet and key to the US’ chances: “We have to keep improving in every area as a team, including getting to know one another. There’s not that continuity or chemistry – there’s the attitude, a great attitude to get to know each other, which is why games like [Saturday’s against Lithuania] are so important and the game [against Spain] is so important.”

Amazing match, Spain had it at the end but Coach K surprised the Spaniards with the zone. It didn’t look like a friendly game at all.

And the perfect result. Spain will want revenge and the US will play hard next time both teams meet (if they meet, of course).

It´s going to be a great World Championship. Can´t wait to see Greece, slovenia, Argentina, etc…

That was one of the worst refereed games I have watched in a long time.
Congrats to the USA for keeping their cool and for pulling off that win despite such blatant homerism by the ref’s.

    Unbelievable.

You can´t be serious about the officiating. Even the guys at the ESPN (mostly from the US) agreed that it was ok.

Zach Harper (Cowbell Kingdom/TrueHoop Network): “I actually thought it was fairly even. The majority of the travel calls were correct. Plus, if they were favoring Spain that much more, no way Rudy gets called for the block against Rose”.

I think there are many other interesting topic to talk about after this game, and the “refrees” are not one of them.

        Garbage.
Travelling completely aside the ref’ing was brutal. The traveling is just something the U.S. will have to get used to – it is just a different interpretation of the rules. It was the contact call that bothered me.

To me (and it is just my view) it seemed the ref’s (especially in the 1st quarter) did everything they could to keep Spain in the game.

The US would get clobbered, and no calls – then right down the floor the same contact is called in Spains favor. It was very one sided, I definitly felt is was much more obvious in the 1st half. How many garbage offensive call were called against the U.S. in the 1st half?

Being Canadian I like to think myself as nuetral…maybe I am not. I have money and bets out there against the U.S. and frankly would like to see them lose. But not like this. I want to see them lose fairly.

Why? Because I voice my opinion?
Did I swear? Did I make a racist comment? Please tell me, what you would ban me for?

Is free speach a fundemental right in whatever country you are from? It doesn’t sound like it…

        Wow.

The game was not called in favor of Spain, nor was the reffing at all biased. The worst call and only obvious blown call of the game was against Spain when they called a block on Fernandez, when it should have been a charge.

If you think that game was called in favor of Spain then you clearly have no clue as to what the FIBA rules are.

wow. things are a little quiet here today. i waited for this day to come all week long. and after yesterdays performance along w/players that had to play w/one more cut looming i frankly didn’t think we were gonna win. but these guys are focus and once that last cut is made and the rotations are tighter we’ll be okay. we still have mental lapses. but it was really good seeing ROSE run a 1/2 court offense. and OMG CURRY RIPPED RUBIO. that was great. i know COACK Scariola didn’t show his entire hand but SPAIN wanted to win the game for many reasons some being
    undefeated pre WC record.
    Home court.
    Win against Americans.
We didn’t really show our hand either, Rubio didn’t get to play against RONDO, LOVE & GRANGER didn’t play & Curry got limited minutes.
we still need to work on some things but what a major difference in the team from yesterday that game was incredible. The SPANISH crowd was nice compared to how ATHENS is gonna be. everyone that thought the US would lose the game is now downplaying the win.
THE YANKS ARE COMING HELLAS. Love Ya. GO USA

Well, i’m going to wait until after the Greece-USA game before doing up another Power Rankings page — weird to think that on Thursday, Greece could be no. 1 and Spain no. 3 — but i reckon right now that it’s USA up, Lithuania down, France up, Brazil way down…

If that is the case, then you will rank Greece about 17 I think. Tsartsartis, Fotsis, Sofo will be suspended by then (according to Greek media) and Bourousis is not playing against the US and at least the first two games of the tournament. On Monday if he does not test well in his X-ray he will be removed from the roster for the tournament.

So if you are waiting for all that, plus after the game where Greece plays the US minus their entire front court, then you should just put Greece about 15-17 now I think. They are expecting to play the tournament with Kaimakoglou as their starting center. They also will have to cut their best shooter and second best scorer, Vasileiadis because of this, because they need more big bodies, due to the suspensions and injuries.

Greece and US are only remaining undefeated teams. I hope you change the rankings accordingly.

Am I the only one who thinks Rubio held his own against the US point guards? Yeah, Curry’s crossover was terrific (but we already know that!), but Ricky played good defense overall and the best Spanish minutes were with him running the offense. He also rebounded well, had some dimes and steals and a good fight with Rose!

Not perfect, but notable! He is just 20 years old, damn it…
