Tuesday transactions: Unicaja signs Rubio (no, not that one); Boumtje-Boumtje stays with EWE EWE

August 11, 2009

Two free-agent signings and one contract extension were announced by Euroleague officials on Tuesday, with Guillem Rubio forsaking Manresa for Unicaja while EWE Baskets Oldenburg signed Acha Njei, most recently of Bundesliga second division team Bremen Roosters; Oldenburg also extended the contract for one of the great names in all of basketball, Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje.

Despite not carrying the moniker of “Ricky,” Rubio-the-shooting-forward is thought to be a significant addition to the team. Currently a Team Spain alternate, Guillem managed averages of 9.5 points and 4.1 rebounds for a marginal Manresa squad.

Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje will stay with Oldenburg for two more years; this fan favorite was one of Bundesliga’s scarier presences underneath last season, taking in 6.5 boards per game.

Finally, 24-year-old Acha Njei makes the big step from second division to Euroleague team in scoring a two-year deal with EWE Baskets. Njei had been with Bremen since 2005. In 18 games with the team in 2006-07, he managed a line of 12.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game; last season, those numbers were 11.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 1.3 apg.
