USA 107, Spain 100: Lebron James continues ownership of 2012 with pair of golden daggers

August 12, 2012

Even more than Vassilis Spanoulis and Olympiacos, 2012 in basketball has belonged to Lebron James. So it is indeed fitting that the King threw the dagger to earn his Team USA the gold.

At 97-91, a double-digit Team USA had evaporated through some sloppy turnovers in what felt like a momentum change, a Spanish charge. And then Lebron returned, getting the ball, charging through the lane while the BBC play-by-play man was reduced to “uh oh.” Slam, 99-91. “And by uh oh,” quipped BBC guy, “I meant ‘wow.’”

On the next possession, it was James for three. USA 102, Spain 93 and “hope was fading” for Los Rojos.

This after Team Spain had managed a brilliant third quarter, trading leads with the US and perhaps inducing a tiny bit of fear. In lieu of Marc Gasol, the formerly nearly-invisible Serge Ibaka had a swell third quarter, capping it with a block on Deron Williams driving to the basket which might’ve given Team USA a three-point lead to end a quarter in which Spain shot 60% overall – and no threes.

Wire writeup to be posted later, but for now kudos to Lebron James, high-scorer Kevin Durant and Team USA for taking the gold, and to Team Spain for fighting adversity, wear and tear for the silver.

USA 59, Spain 58 after 20 minutes: Notes and suchUS NBA stars beat Spain to take gold

USA only beat Spain by 7 and Lithuania by 5.

A team of 12 Euroleague all stars would beat Team USA by 30-40 points.

Dude, I think you need to put down the pipe. Euroleague doesn’t compare to the NBA. In fact, its not even remotely close. If you think teams being competitive with the USA in a couple games makes them better, you are clearly delusional. Spain lost several times in these games and Lithuania didn’t even come close to winning a medal. USA has now won three straight golds in international competition and probably could have fielded 3 teams capable of winning gold. Not to mention they didn’t even have Howard, Wade, Bosh, Rose, Griffin and many of their other best players. Euroleague All-Stars are scrubs in the NBA.

When did Team USA ever beat a European all star team? They barely could beat ACB and LKL players………..

I bet Team USA could not win more than 1 game out of 5 against a European all star team.

Dude to be honest there are some very talented and capable european players but for the top european baller at his respective position there is at least 2 to 3 americans that is equal but in most cases better with the sole exception being Dirk. If a European all-star and american all-star squad played and the professional Euroleague & nba coaches were asked for their predictions the overwhelming answer would be the american though the euroleague coaches would say probably by 6 points at most while the nba coaches would say by 6 points only if the americans played the worst possible game they could play.

Hahaha Wow now that the USA has now shown their utter dominance with a three-peat (2008 Olympics, 2010 World Championship and 2012 Olympics) you are still sprouting your delusional nonsense. Show respect where respect is due. 2006 was a long time ago. USA has shown they are the best.

About this USA vs European all-star team is just theoretical nonsense like the present team vs the original dream team. The USA is an individual country so they play other individual countries.

They couldn’t beat ACB and LKL players. . .?

How many of Spain’s key players played in the ACB last year? Conversely, how many of them played in the NBA?

Did the US really play against ACB players?

    On to Lithuania-US. . .
Did you watch the Lithuania-US game? The US played at about 70% and still won. I’m not justifying their performance–I think it were shameful–but they clearly didn’t try hard, especially on defense, and they still comfortably won the game. Yes, the margin was only five points, but that was after Lithuania scored several garbage-time buckets in the closing minutes that made the final margin that close.

Where does Lithuania’s best player play?

    As for Euroleague All-Stars. . .

Here is a list of past EL All-Star teams: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-Euroleague_Team

While a good game, they would still lose to this Team USA, probably nine out of ten times. A truly intriguing contest, however, would be USA-World, with a World team having the option of selecting from:

C-Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Joakim Noah
PF-Dirk Nowitzki, Al Horford Serge Ibaka
SF-Andrei Kirilenko, Nicolas Batum, Danilo Gallinari
    SG-Manu Ginobili, Dimitri Diamantidis
    PG-Tony Parker, Steve Nash

They still don’t have the star-power, especially at guard, that the Americans possess, but they are impressive nonetheless. My guess is that in a best-of-seven, a true US team (with Howard, Wade, etc) would win in six.

Wow. You would think that the USA’s domination would help you see reality. Funny how all the best Euroleague players were not playing in the Olympics. Except of course AK-47 who after his one year in Euroleague where he was the MVP and DPOY is heading back to the NBA to be a role player. Or Navarro who was shut down in the second half of the gold medal game. Serbia and Greece which are made up of mainly Euroleague players could not even qualify! lol

No end to Gabe’s LIES and BULLSHIT here.

Gabe: “Nigeria had one NBA player and 11 college and D-League players”.

Actually, zero college players, zero D-League players.

4 guys that were in the NBA, and Oguchi will make 5, as NBA teams are offering him contracts.

    Obasohan played in Eurocup/Spanish League.

    Archibong played in Euroleague/Eurocup.

    Oyedeji played in NBA/Euroleague/Spanish League.

    Oguchi – heading to NBA.

    Diogu – NBA player

    Al-Farouk Aminu – NBA player.

Skinn – moved to a Eurocup team.

Dagunduro – moved to the Italian League.

Ugboaja – NBA draft pick (spent half a year with the Cavs in the NBA)

Alade Aminu – Will play in Euroleague this year.

I love how a team comprised of 5 guys that played in NBA, 3 guys that played in the Euroleague………….is a “team of 1 NBA player and 11 scrubs from college and D-League”)

More and more of Gabe’s lies are exposed every time I check his claims here.

It is clear to me now that the Gold medal game was fixed. David Stern payed the Spanish team to only select NBA scrub talent instead of Euroleague players that are clearly far superior. And Dallasqueer is such a troll it is unbelievable, this comment is grounds for removal from this site. Still, the refs were in favor of the USA and this is proved by Lithuania pointing out their travelling violations. It was fixed this year, 2010 was fixed, 2008 was fixed.

Greece is obviously the better team with better talent

Let’s see….USA 2x Olympic champions and World Champions. Greece eliminated by Nigeria in Olympic qualifier and 11th place in the World Championship. hahahahahahahaha

2006 seems so long ago now. The Olympics showed how superior the US and the NBA is. Even the Euroleague MVP is headed back to the NBA to be a role player. The only Euroleague player to do anything on the global stage of the Olympics was 32 year old Navarro who was shut out in the 2nd half of the gold medal game by 34 year old Bryant.

The pro season is about to start and the nba-stars with their gold medals are about to join their teams in the best league in the world, not to mention the best players on the other top teams in the Olympics: the Gasol brothers, AK-47, Ginobli, Scola, Patty Mills, hell even Shved is coming the the NBA.

So in two years the US will be back to make it 4 global competitions in a row while Greece will have difficulty just qualifying for the WC. I predict Greece to be the new Italy. Silver medalists who will eventually fade to irrelevancy on the global basketball stage.

      USA-Champions!

Greece has the #1 European generation in the 1990, 1994, 1997 age groups according to several draft sites.

How the fuck is Greece going to be “like Italy”, when they have one of, maybe even the best youth generation of all time in Europe coming up?

What is in the water where you live Gabe?

    You know what I predict?

Team USA will never win another medal.

Just as big of psycho talk as saying Greece won’t.

My god, I just realized it’s true. Apollo isn’t the troll at all, it;s Gabe all along.

Greece is like Italy because they are both silver medalist who did worse and worse each tournament afterwards, although Italy fell quicker than Greece.

      Italy: Silver-9th place-DNQ Olympics-DNQ World Championship

      Greece: Silver-5th place-11th place-DNQ Olympics-???

I’m pretty sure Greece will qualify of the World Championship though. Even if they don’t qualify through Eurobasket they will probably get one of the wild cards. My point is Greece has fallen from a team that eliminated the US to a team that was eliminated by a team that lost to the US by 83.

I think I big difference with Greece now is no Papaloukas. The troll on this site is in love with Spanoulis but Spanoulis is just a scrub who failed in the NBA and as the best player on his team led Greece to a 11th place finish and could not qualify for the Olympics. Sure he can score, but so can Patty Mills. Papaloukas was a team leader and a true point guard. He had 12 assists in the victory over the US in 2006, more than double the amount of assists of any other player on either team. He was the one who was voted to the all-tournament team when Greece won their silver, not Spanoulis. He also has been voted 2X all-Euroleague 1st team, Euroleague MVP, Euroleague finals MVP, European player of the year, Euroleague all-decade team and one of the 50 greatest Euroleague contributors while all Spanoulis has is one all-Euroleague 1st team and 2X Euroleague MVP. If Papaloukas went over to the NBA in the his prime I’m sure he would have been a lot more successful than Spanoulis but he never did so we can only speculate but he never failed like Spanoulis so he will be forever known as one of the best (recent) players to not play in the NBA. With Spanoulis as the caption the Greek basketball team is sinking fast.

See I don’t hate everything Greek, I respect Papaloukas I just say it like it is. Spanoulis is a scrub and USA #1, Spain #2 and I was one Shved three pointer away from Argentina being #3. I was also correct about my prediction of an African team taking the final Olympic spot away from a European team. I admit I was wrong about my China prediction. But I still predict that a basketball loving nation of 1.3 billion people, maybe not in 2 years or 4 years, but in our lifetimes will become a basketball power.

Yeah, I pretty much think Greece will fade into irrelevancy soon. Gabe’s right,2006 was a fluke win and in 10 years, after Greece still hasn’t qualified in the WC or the Olympics, Greece will be forgotten, like Italy. Even in 2006, Greece struggled in close games, and just played out of their minds in winning in the semis, but it was a just a rare thing, sort of like an eclipse.

And we know this now because Greece hasn’t done a thing since. Some NBA scouts even got fooled with that game thinking Spanoulis was a good player, until he went to Houston and basically crapped in his pants.

Maybe Greece can petition FIBA so they can get out of the European region, and join Africa. Maybe that will give them a better chance to win and join the WC and the Olympics, oh wait, I forgot, Nigeria beat Greece, so Greece can’t even qualify from Africa. Oh well.Sad.

    How ’bout Asia?

      Mike,

Perhaps you didn’t know it, but Greece is a world class power in Basketball for the last 25 years. We have more longetivity than most countries, and we may have failed in the last 3 years but we will return to full power – the key is having a full roster.
Just to give you an idea, we won the Euro in 1987, we were 2nd in 1989, 4th in 1993,1995,1997, 4th in Olympics 1996 and WC 1998. Then 5th in Olympics 2004, 1st in Euro 2005 , 2nd in WC 2006 and 3rd in Euro 2009.

So you may say whatever you like, but because you didn’t know us and you are still hurt, this doesn’t mean that we were a one tourney team. Cu..

Nigerian national team centers Ike Diogu and Akin Akingbala (did not play at the Olympics, but played in the Euroleague last year)…….

were both offered to Greek league club Panathinaikos by their agents.

Panathinaikos denied signing either of them citing, “they are not up the standards of our club”.

Gabe and mike were wrong YET AGAIN. FIBA denied the request of Mark Cuban and David Stern to make the Olympics under-23, and also denied their request to place the FIBA World Cup under NBA control and ownership.

Also, the FIBA World Cup will officially become FIBA’s world basketball flagship and showcase, with the Olympics officially taking second in importance.

Finally, the court size and 3 point distance will be the same as in the NBA – evidently they felt sorry for Stern and Cuban, so they threw those dogs a little bone.
