We have an intelligent public

January 9, 2008

You may have already heard some players talking about their fans. You are also used to hear coaching thanking the crowd for being such a good support. But this is the first I heard this.

The coach of the German BBL team SSV Ulm said after their home win last weekend against Tübingen:

We have seen again, what an intelligent Basketball attendance we have here at our Kuhberghalle (gym).

What was he talking about? In fact, one of the main players of the team, former Harvard player Konrad Wysocki, got injured in the 2nd quarter. He got transported out of the gym to get a little treatment. But the team of Ulm was trailing and when Konrad entered back into the gym at the beginning of the fourth quarter, he smashed a bottle of water on the floor and gave with this move a signal. I am back, let’s win this now.

The public recognized this move and understood that the team needs their support right now. They felt the momentum in the game changed by this little symbol of the smashed water bottle. Ulm came back, and won the game. And after it, everybody said that it was the best atmosphere ever in their home arena.

So if you want to be part of an intelligent basketball public, follow the guy in the little promo video of the team and join them in one of their homegames 😉
