Working out in jail

September 27, 2007

Sometimes I am wondering if some of the basketball players know how blessed they are that they can make money with basketball. Latest example would be Lonny Baxter. Lonny Baxter won two NCAA championships with the University of Maryland and was picked by the Chicago Bulls in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft. He also played with four other NBA teams in three years – but hey this is enough to make a career in Europe – at least at that time.

So he went to Italy to play with Euroleague club Montepaschi Siena – well at least he signed with them. He must have been so happy about his new contract that he went to Washington D.C. to fire his .40 caliber Glock handgun into the air. He got sentenced to 60 days in prison.

But I guess Lonny did not learn his lesson. Spanish ACB Club DKV Joventut is having a try out with Petar Popovic right now because “Badalona squad is waiting for Lonny Baxter who is in jail right now”. This time he got in trouble for shipping four guns via FedEx in July 2006 without notifying them that the shipment contained firearms.

Is Europe that dangerous that you need four guns? Guys – not everybody looks like the guy in our logo in Europe!

He has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, two years of supervised release and a $2,000 fine on August 31, 2007.

EDIT: I felt bad for Lonny and wanted to post a nice video of him – see what comes up on youtube FIRST when you search for “Lonny Baxter”
