CAI Zaragoza tops club ranking again

June 11, 2009

After the League Ranking published a few days ago that saw the ACB confirm its status as most popular league in terms of game attendance, the club rankings also see a repeat, with the presence of Spanish team CAI Zaragoza at the top of the table.

The club rankings are dominated by ACB teams, which is not a big surprise. The only exception is ALBA Berlin, which moved up to second place because of the new O2 World arena which provided them so many opportunities. Zaragoza could not really do better, as they improved by just 0.62% over last season despite moving up a division. ALBA increased their average attendance by 35.5% to 9360 spectators per game. Third place went to TAU Ceramica, also the third team to be above the 9000 mark, with 9231 spectators per game.

The ACB has nine of the top 10 spots in the rankings, while it only has three teams in the second 10. From 11 to 20, you can find the top Italian team (La Fortezza Bologna), the second-best German squad (Brose Baskets) and the Israeli champs Maccabi Tel Aviv. A nice surprise is the presence of Zadar in 16th place with an 5772.7 average in the Adriatic League. The biggest increase since last year for all teams on which data was available was shown by Russian’s Spartak Saint Petersburg, which moved its average by 120.43% to 3481.8 fans in the arena.

Another interesting point is the presence of proposed Euroleague A-License teams in the rankings. While three Spanish teams (TAU, Unicaja and Real) are in the top ten, the next are far lower in the ranking. Maccabi Tel Aviv finishes in 14th place, while Montepaschi comes in at number 21.

After having already seen a decrease in their average attendance in the Euroleague, CSKA did not fare better in the Russian Superleague, finishing only 106th overall, with a decrease of 11.16% to 2165.7 spectators per game. The worst Euroleague A-License team for attendance is Efes Pilsen Istanbul, though, with a stunning average of 391.7 “fans” to rank 284th.

The full rankings include all the teams for which we found data available until today, and the data represents only regular season games. Additionally, it should be noted that the Greek teams only published the number of sold tickets per game, which does not include season ticket holders and thus their averages can be considered higher than posted.

Spanish league is the best of europe and the second os de world, but is the best of the world with FIBA rules.

Cáceres 2016 returm to ACB, we are an enormius basketball fans.

ABOUT
BallinEurope.com was founded in September 2007 by Christophe Ney (who now runs the excellent scouting-themed website European Prospects) and Tobias Seitz, both then bloggers for FIBA.com with over 10 years’ worth of experience in the professional basketball world each. The mission then was to “provide a very unique perspective of Basketball in and about Europe.”
