Topsy-turvy Turkey as Galatasaray pushes Anadolu Efes down the TBL table

March 6, 2012

Strange days indeed in Turkey … just three days after Galatasaray and Anadolu Efes were bounced from Euroleague play, the TBL standings have become nearly unrecognizable; for the first time in probably forever, clubs named “Efes” or “Fenerbahçe Ülker” do not appear in the top two on the Turkish league table after Galatasaray’s 74-65 win at their former Euroleague mates – while dumping Ilias Zouros to an overall 0-2 mark as head coach of Efes.

By the European scoring system, Galatasaray is in a statistical tie with Adam Morrison and Pops Mensah-Bonsu’s Beşiktaş Milangaz, but Americans reckon the Medical Parkers have a 1½ game edge on the Eagles for the no. 1 spot. In any case, here’s the bizarre look of Turkish basketball in 2011-12 after 20 weeks.

Galatasaray Medical Park, 16-3 (35 points)
Beşiktaş Milangaz, 15-5 (35)
Banvit, 15-4 (34)
Anadolu Efes, 15-4 (34)
Fenerbahçe Ülker, 14-6 (34)

Whoa, parity in the TBL: What a concept…
