Roko-Leni Ukic to sign in Toronto

July 5, 2008

It has been talked about for days that Roko Ukic will leave the Euroleague to sign his first NBA contract with the Toronto Raptors in the immediate future. The Croatian PG will be the back up on the playmaker spot of the Spanish Jose Manuel Calderon.

Ukic, who played a very interesting season with Lottomatica Virtus Roma this year and led them to the Finals of the Italian League, has matured enough to now play against the best PGs in the world. With his good speed and nice direction changes, he can split defenses at the highest level.

Ukic declared to the Croatian press:

I am 23 years old right now. Calderon came to the NBA in the same situation. If I will play 15 minutes per game, I am happy.

Well, it looks like the Raptors are not so sure about this as they will probably sign another veteran backup to help the two Europeans at the PG spot. However, the future of the EuroRaptors will mostly depend on two European guards. Is there any other NBA team with two Euro point guards? We’ll see how this works out.

At least, here are some highlights of Ukic of the last season of a nice game he had against Real Madrid in the Euroleague and where he showed all his talent to score 19pts and dish out 8 assists.
