Rubio rumor/speculation of the day: A T-Wolves/Joventut trade?

August 29, 2009

From Hoopsworld.com comes not exactly a complete story on Ricky Rubio (when that day comes, you’ll know) but instead a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry interesting quote that may speak volumes.

Via Hoopsworld and HoopsHype.com comes translation of a story at AS.com on Señor Rubio.

Said DKV Joventut president Jordi Villacampa: There is “another important offer from the Minnesota Timberwolves” that is keeping Joventut from selling Rubio’s contract to FC Barcelona.

“Important offer,” eh? Well, since it seems DKV Joventut won’t budge on the buyout price and T-wolves David Kahn has discussed the matter – or perhaps other matters – in person twice, maybe it isn’t money at stake…

Now check out Matthew Hayden’s speculation at BleacherReport.com for an compelling theory: Is it possible that this season we’ll see Rubio in a Minnesota jersey while Loukas Mavrokefalidis, Nikola Pekovic, Henk Norel and/or Nick Calathes in Joventut colors?

Forget the Brandon Jennings phenomenon. Imagine trades between the NBA and Europe increasing as a viable economic option for both sides…

Fascinating.

Of course, it could all be over much sooner than we think. The AS.com piece goes so far as to state that “Tonight [the Timberwolves] could know Joventut’s final decision … and the [fate] of Ricky.”

Only nick calathes, pekovic and mavrokefalidis are not under contract from the wolves but from panathinaikos/olympiacos. draft picks are worth nada in europe, otherwise they could trade ricky rubio for ricky rubio…as they would “own” him already by their pick. Moving pekovic this year could be harder than getting rubio…
Anyways, this guy at bleachers does not know what he is talking about, but the idea of setting up trades and loans with nba teams is nice.

Very interesting concept, but not possible or binding with the way the current collective bargining agreement is set up in the NBA. There is a great deal of “loaning” (for $) between US Pro soccer and European soccer… David Beckham, but there is no provision for that currently with NBA players. I’m sure agents, clubs and NBA GM’s will be looking at this closely. It could open up a whole new approach to trading. With the NBA’s high priority on a Global approach, don’t rule it out.
