2012 Olympic Qualifying Tournament Preview: Team Russia

June 27, 2012

With the lengthily-named 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men tipping off in Venezuela on Monday, BallinEurope takes some time this week to catch up on the four European squads in the running for a trip to London and reckon on a brief assessment of each’s chances in the competition. First up is Russia, the Continent’s representative in qualifying group C.

Extended roster: Semen Antonov (BC Nizhny Novgorod); Sergey Bykov, Maxim Grigoryev (Lokomotiv Kuban); Sasha Kaun, Viktor Khryapa, Andrei Kirilenko, Anton Ponkrashov, Alexey Shved, Eugeny Voronov, Andrey Vorontsevich (CSKA Moscow); Sergey Karasev (Triumph Lyubertsy); Timofey Mozgov (Denver Nuggets); Sergey Monya, Vitaly Fridzon, Dmitry Khvostov (BC Khimki Moscow region); and Artem Yakovenko (Unics Kazan); head coach David Blatt (Maccabi Tel Aviv)

How they got here: Last year in Lithuania, the only team that could stop the Russian juggernaut was France. Les Bleus used a single 8-0 run in the third quarter and a career game from Nicolas Batum (19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks) to squeak past the theretofore undefeated Team Russia in the semifinals.

In settling for a 10-1 overall mark and third place in Eurobasket 2011, Russia gave ample demonstration that this side isn’t going away after the 2007 miracle. This team showed it can score at 78.3 ppg while outstandingly protecting the offensive glass with a tourney second-best 12.5 per game. The fact that they’re bringing essentially the same roster to qualifiers and Olympics makes them among the favorites to reach the podium in London.

What they’ve done recently: Only notched a couple of blowout wins against outgunned competition. On Monday, Team Russia rolled through a Great Britain side playing without Luol Deng, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Joel Freeland and Robert Archibald, 87-51 in San Antonio; against a young FYR Macedonia team playing without its Eurobasket 2011 studs, it was 80-61.

Despite once fearing jetlag issues and extended seasons, Team Russia has got to be stoked by the on-form play of nearly everyone in these warmup exercises following a sluggish loss to Greece in its first friendly. Vitaly Fridzon and Sergey Monya have contributed two double-figure scoring nights each, while Timofey Mozgov went for 16 in the Britain romp and Sasha Kaun led all scorers against FYR Macedonia; Euroleague MVP Andrei Kirilenko and Viktor Khryapa have also been reliable contributors on both ends of the floor in limited minutes.

Head coach David Blatt could find some reason to complain about allowing Eric Boateng to go for 14 boards – though these were mostly defensive and often against the end of the Russian bench. However, Blatt has the luxury of enviable depth with which to experiment and has stated he plans to get everyone some playing time in deciding upon his final rotations. “We’re really trying different sets, different combinations and different rosters in the four lineups,” said Kirilenko before the game against Team Britain.

Next up is Lithuania in another friendly in the ‘States.

Player to watch: How about Sergey Karasev of Lokomotiv Kuban? (Hell, you already know all the other names, right?) The 19-year-old who hops like a pro – he took the U18 dunk contest during Eurobasket 2011 – won’t see much playing time even if he makes the squad, but remember the name as a harbinger of things to come for Team Russia. A 2.01m (6’7”) forward who can pass, shoot from anywhere and, of course, dunk makes Karasev look like a smaller Kirilenko, bringing versatility any national team could use.

Weaknesses: Speed is not this team’s forte and naturally Blatt prefers to slow the game down to apply his halfcourt defensive traps; this could become an issue and ultimately allowed a more athletic France to wear Russia down just enough in Eurobasket. A fleeter FYR Macedonia side also provided a couple of scares in that tournament.

In the longer-term, all roads go through Spain: Los Rojos are a team keenly suited to defeat Russia with the appropriate size and much more mobility in the painted area from the Gasols and Serge Ibaka. On the other hand, Ibaka is one of the few significant changes to either team’s roster since that climactic Eurobasket 2007 final…

Outlook: In short, these guys will certainly be ready to go on Monday; BiE can’t imagine groupmates South Korea (no. 31 in FIBA world rankings) and Dominican Republic (no. 25) giving them too many problems.

Out of the three European powers in the qualifying tournament (Russia, Lithuania, Greece) I see Russia having the biggest chance of being upset, maybe by Angola or Puerto Rico.

What about FYR of Macedonia? They had a great tournament last year, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they got upended this year.

I didn’t mention FYR of Macedonia because they are not a European “power” and it would not be an upset if they didn’t make the Olympics. In fact it would be an upset if they made the Olympics. Remember there are only three spots available.

Seriously Gabe, for someone who so often equates past tournament performance, and NBA player count on the roster, with strength, guessing at an Angola over Russia upset doesn’t make a lot of sense 😛

I’m making it official: if Angola upsets Russia, I will personally steal Apollo’s favorite crack pipe and give it to you as a present.

It’s not so far fetched. Angola has beaten Germany and New Zealand before. Nigeria, which is a worse team than Angola, beat Serbia, a better team than Russia. So it is possible.

Right now out of the European “Power Teams” I got to say imo Lithuania has looked the weakest through their prep games. Add to that they would likely face Puerto Rico in the first knockout game, and the recipe is there for Lithuania going down.

Do you not wonder why it is that Serbia didn’t even make the Olympic QT?

I’m not saying right now but generally. I mean Nigeria beat them in 2006. But considering Serbia won silver in the 2009 Euro’s and was 4th in 2010 WC I would say, all and all, they have been a stronger team than Russia.

Ha! Who’s prediction of Angola seems so crazy now? This should end the crazy notion that Eurobasket is the toughest competition. The team that finished 4th in Eurobasket lost to the team from the weakest zone, the best team from the weakest zone but still the weakest zone.

If Angola can beat FYR of Macedonia so can China, Australia and Brazil, stronger teams than Angola. So if the weakest teams in the Olympics can beat FYR of Macedonia , which finished 4th in Eurobasket, imagine how they would destroy the weaker teams of Eurobasket that place 9-13 like Finland, Georgia, Bulgaria, Great Britain and Israel. Most Olympic teams would finish in the top 10 in Eurobasket not to mention the Olympics have the addition of USA, the best team in the world, and Argentina, a team that has finished in the top 5 of every global competition since 2002!

You think teams like Angola are weak because they never win games in the Olympics, but the Olympics have only the best teams in the world, no Israels or Bulgarias. The teams that struggle in the Olympics, like Angola, would be a top 10 team in Eurobasket. If FYR of Macedonia can beat teams like Slovenia, Greece and Lithuania that so can Angola, China, Brazil and Australia as Angola proved today.

Long live Angola! Long live African basketball! Angola burmaye! Angola burmaye!

Don`t forget that in euro-basket 2011 in position 5-8 you can find teams like Serbia,Greece and Lithuania.
Your argument is not strong enough.
It is like me saying that Turkey that finished 11nth in the Eurobasket 2011 was the second team in the worldbasket2010 therefore imagine Spain that is the european champion what would be in the world.
This is not as simple as you present it.
Of course China, Australia and Brazil can beat anybody in a single game even USA but generally you don`t agree that european basketball level is higher than asian , latin american or african?

Of course zahos you mistook what I said. Europe is by far the most difficult zone. But it is not more difficult than the World Championship or the Olympics. There were people here posting that said Eurobasket is more difficult because teams like Croatia, Israel and FYR of Macedonia are better than Angola, China, Australia, Brazil, etc… Which we can see is not true.

No Zahos, you can’t make the Spain -Turkey argument. It doesn’t hold water. Yes , Turkey finished 2nd in the Worlds, but Spain also played in the same tournament, didn’t they? They lost, and Turkey proved to be the better team, at least for the Worlds.

If your asking me who I think the better team is between Turkey and Spain, I say it’s Spain, but not overwhelmingly so. Same thing with Gabe’s argument. You guys seem to think European teams are automatically better than teams like Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Angola. From the American point of view, the difference is no longer that stark.

However, I don’t know about Gabe, but I will concede that the Eurobasket is probably a higher level competition, IN GENERAL, than other zones, except for the US and Argentina. Give Gabe credit he predicted Angola beating Macedonia.

      Oh come on!
Angola win over FYROM doesn`t mean that Angola is better than FYROM no more than Greece win over USA doesn`t mean that Greece is better than USA.
      You know how this go….

Yes Eurobasket is the best zone tournament but not tougher than the Olympics or World Championships.

Spain is a lot better than Turkey at least with Pau. Remember in 2010 they played without Pau but they still are a lot better than Turkey overall. Turkey had one good tournament on their soil.

I didn’t exactly predict Angola beating FYR of Macedonia but I did say that if any country would be able to pull the upset and take the final Olympic spot from one of the European powers (Lithuania, Greece, Russia) it would be Angola. So in essence, for Angola to have a chance to do that they would have to be able to beat the weaker European, FYROM, so I guess in essence I sort of did predict it.

No Angola’s win doesn’t mean they are better than FYROM. It just further reinforces it. Angola is one of the top 15 teams in the world. Tunisia’s upset of them in the African championship was a huge upset. Sure Angola never wins any games in the Olympics but that’s because the Olympic’s are the best of the best, they always advance out of pool play in the WC.

In 2010 they had the unfortunate luck of facing the US in the 1st round but they beat Germany in pool play. You might say Germany without Nowitzki but that Germany team without Nowitzki beat the Serbian team that ended up placing 4th.

In 2006 they meet France, which placed 5th in the tournament, in the 1st round and only lost by 6 points.

I would take them over FYROM any day.

EuroBasket is a TOUGHER competition than the Olympics. This is a fact and anyone saying otherwise is just an automatic idiot.

I’ve heard so many coaches and players say EuroBasket is the harder tournament. The overwhelming majority think that.

Yeah Eurobasket, where a team that places 4th like FYR of Macedonia is not even good enough to make the Olympic gets it’s ass kicked by Angola., a team that hasn’t won an Olympic basketball game in the past 20 years. Do you really think a team like FYR of Macedonia could make the semi-finals of the Olympics?

Angola is the 15th best team in the world huh pal? Why are you even here? Are you a black supremacist?

Let me guess, the reason you overrate Angola and brag on them like you do the USA is because their whole team is made of black players………

    Gabe = a racist.

It’s obvious that you’re the racist. Anyway name a team ranked past 15th that’s better than Angola. They already kicked the ass of the Cinderella of basketball. Wait until tomorrow when they beat #18 New Zealand and than go on to win their match in the semi-finals. To get the 3rd spot would be difficult because Russia, Greece and Lithuania are better but they are the third best team in the tournament.

Why in the world does Apollo hate black people so much? If you look at his posts on other forums, going back > 4 years, he keeps spewing this bizarre racial stuff. It’s not even funny enough to laugh about.

Yeah he definitely is racist. He is from Eastern/Southern Europe which I heard has many issues with racism. I read about incident in soccer where players complained about racist chants from the fans which mainly come from eastern/southern. Not that some Americans aren’t racist too, you should have seen some of the posts when that black hockey player’s goal eliminated some team from the Stanley Cup playoffs not to mention the Trayvon Martin case, but at least American basketball fans are use to the majority of players being black.

So add Apollo’s racism to his inferiority complex about European basketball and here you have Team USA, which is over 90% black, constantly kicking the ass of his heroes. It’s sort of like Jesse Owens dominating the 1936 Olympics (not that I am in any way comparing Apollo to the Nazis, I am just using it as an extreme example)

gabe, mike, phileus = black supremacists.

    Apollo or whoever is right.

Talking about Angola being better than European teams is proof of that. Only a total racist that believes only blacks can play basketball could possibly think Angola is better than European teams.

You guys are racists against white people and you are not fooling anyone.

Hahaha. “Apollo or whoever is right” good one.

As for me I’m white and I’ll hazard to guess so is Mike and Phileus so we’re racist against our own race? lol

And I don’t believe only blacks can play basketball. I believe Spain and Argentina are the 2nd and third best teams in the world and they’re all white, except of Ibaka. In fact I think the top 2-11 national teams are mostly non-black. I just commented that I feel Angola is better than teams like Slovenia and Croatia but I think Australia and China are too.

But I think I am understanding the psyche of Apollo. He is a nationalist and racist basketball fan. Poor him. It must be so infuriating to have the top team in the World, Team USA, that constantly kicks his national team’s, and all other European national teams’ asses, be like 90% black. I’m not being racist when I point to the fact the 90% of the top ballers are black. It’s just fact. That’s like someone being called racist for pointing to the fact that 99% of the top hockey players are white.
