For Phil Jackson: What to expect from Bennett Salvatore

A bit of an aside here, if you would be so kind, BallinEurope readers, and an apology; you see, i’m still traumatized by Sunday’s Los Angeles Lakers-San Antonio Spurs game. Due to that old life/other plans thing, i waited until last night to watch the possible playoff matchup in a game that’s often a regular-season […]

The BallinEurope All-Decade All-European Team

While technically this decade doesn’t end until 2010, with millions of sports websites and blogs proclaiming December 31 the end of the 2000s, who is BallinEurope to be pedantic? (Especially when there’s a good excuse to make an all-time team roster.) Therefore, in the spirit of a new era, BallinEurope seeks to comprise Europe’s All-Decade […]

It's official: Repesa out as Team Croatia coach

FIBA officials made it official late yesterday: Jasmin Repesa, citing personal disappointment with his team’s performance in Eurobasket 2009, has resigned as Croatia national basketball team coach. Though Croatian media had reported Repesa’s imminent dismissal/retirement from the post as early as two weeks ago and his contract ran out as of Croatia’s elimination from this […]

Eurobasket 2009 championship: Serbia can win if…

“Let’s be realistic. Spain is a great team” – Nikolas Zisis, Greece That’s the lead quote over at the Eurobasket 2009 official site, and it’s good enough to lead here at BallinEurope.com as well on the morning of the final game. Firstly, congratulations to Spain and Serbia for getting into the final game after a […]

Best of the (basketball) net: Never Gonna Give You Up edition

Found in Ball in Europe’s meanderings online this week: A buncha stuff on Eurobasket, the Allen Iverson-in-Memphis deal, and what Ron Artest was doing on September 11th this year. Happy Surfing Sunday! As Eurobasket progresses, the Euroleague page on Facebook has naturally had capsule blurbs on the action posted this week, and a certain team’s […]

Team Spain takes U16 tourney, garners sixth medal in 2009

Congratulations this morning go out to – believe it or not – Team Spain, who managed to knock off host Lithuania in Kaunas, 70-64. Jaime Fernandez led all scorers in the final game, putting in 20 points just as he had in the semifinal against Serbia. For those of you keeping score at home, Spain […]

Team Russia disarmed of AK-47 for EuroBasket 2009

Team Russia’s road to defending its EuroBasket title just got a whole lot longer; yesterday Andrei Kirilenko – so key to the Russian championship in 2007 – comfirmed that he would not be participating in the 2009 tournament. Kirilenko’s no show couples another massive absence for EuroBasket, namely point guard J.R. Holden of CSKA Moscow, […]

The token American responds: Be afraid

My main man Tobias is, as we’d say in the ‘States, fighting the good fight this morning with his “US national team announced – are you scared?” Mr. T. engaged in some positive cheerleading for Europe in stating that teams like Lithuania, Spain and Russia need not be scared at all of Team USA. Do […]
