The NBBL, the future of German basketball

October 7, 2007

This weekend started the second edition of the German NBBL, a under 19 league which has been created last year in order to give the young German players more possibilities to play on a competitive level. Last year, it was Team Urspring that won the Top 4 tournament in Paderborn.

The league is divided into 4 divisions (Northwest, Northeast, Middle and South) with every time 8 teams. So the league in itself counts 32 squads that compete to reach the Top4 Tournament that will be played in spring 2008. Four teams of each division qualify for the Playoffs that will be played in Best of three series.

Last season saw the Team Urspring winning it suprisingly in the Final behind an enormous game of Christian Standhardinger who was one of the best scorers in the whole league. And this year, Urspring can be considered as the main favorite to go again for the final win. In fact, the team has still all its important elements together and could even add some more promising talent.

The league is organized very professionally and you can follow all the games and find the boxscores on the official website (www.nbbl-basketball.de). I will also follow the league on a very close basis through my own blog European Prospects where you can find now a preview of the most outstanding talents that will play in the NBBL this year. You can also follow very closely the team of Central Hoops Berlin as they have their own youtube channel.

And as a little present, you can watch here this spectacular dunk from Dimitry McDuffie over Elias Harris during last season’s game between Breitengüssbach and Speyer.
