Preview – Greece vs Ukraine

September 5, 2022

It’s the sixth day of EuroBasket 2022 and the fourth day of action in Group C in Milan. Greece and Ukraine are both a perfect 3-0 but who will effectively secure top spot with a win on Tuesday?

Where and when?
Mediolanum Forum, Milan, Italy. Tip off: 17.00 CEST, 16.00 BST, 11.00 EST, 08.00 PST

Record to date
Greece 3-0 (W vs Croatia, W vs Italy, W vs Great Britain)
Ukraine 3-0 (W vs Great Britain, W vs Estonia, W vs Italy)

What do the bookies say?
Despite the matching records, Greece are overwhelming 1/10 favourites while Ukraine are 29/4. The point spread favours Greece as -14.5 favourites.

What do we say?
There’s no getting over the scale of Monday’s win for Ukraine over Italy. Not only are they through to the knockout stages but they have announced their arrival as a team that nobody can ignore.

The only downside to that is that Greece definitely won’t overlook them now and will surely be motivated to clinch top spot for sure with a win (tie breakers mean a win for Greece guarantees first place, a win for Ukraine makes things far messier because of Croatia) and do so with a well-rested Giannis Antetokounmpo who sat out the win over Great Britain.

The pick
Greece straight up but the spread is a tougher call. Ukraine’s got the motivation to hang in there but a lot of emotional energy will have been spent on Monday night. I’m taking Greece to cover.
