Current rosters for 2012 European, USA Olympic teams [Updated]

June 27, 2012

Last Friday, FIBA released its first “power ladder” (a.k.a. “power rankings”) for 2012 Olympic basketball; BallinEurope therefore thought to post a list of the seven Continental team rosters – plus, as a measuring stick, the pool for Team USA – as they currently stand.

Team rosters with last professional club alongside each player and coach are listed below in order of their FIBA ranking in parentheses. The FIBA system does come with a couple of caveats: 1) Not all teams are listed with Korea, Jordan, New Zealand (What? Come on, some respect for Kirk Penney!), Nigeria and Venezuela omitted; and 2) the rankings are based solely on wins and losses with no regard to level of competition. In the top spot is Nigeria, whose seemingly impressive 7-0 start represents seven mostly blowout wins against Chinese club teams. BiE reckons it’ll be quite some time before another table with Nigeria and Australia in the top spots, with France, Spain and Team USA in the cellar.

1. (4) Russia – Semen Antonov (BC Nizhny Novgorod); Sergey Bykov, Maxim Grigoryev (Lokomotiv Kuban); Sasha Kaun, Viktor Khryapa, Andrei Kirilenko, Anton Ponkrashov, Alexey Shved, Eugeny Voronov, Andrey Vorontsevich (CSKA Moscow); Sergey Karasev (Triumph Lyubertsy); Timofey Mozgov (Denver Nuggets); Sergey Monya, Vitaly Fridzon, Dmitry Khvostov (BC Khimki Moscow region); and Artem Yakovenko (Unics Kazan); head coach David Blatt (Maccabi Tel Aviv)

Notable no shows: None.

2. (5) Greece – Vassilis Spanoulis, Georgios Printezis, Kostas Papanikolaou, Kostas Sloukas, Evangelos Mantzaris (Olympiacos); Ioannis Bourousis, Antonis Fotsis (Olimpia Milano); Nikos Zisis (Montepaschi Siena); Nick Calathes, Kostas Kaimakoglou, Ian Vougioukas (Panathinaikos); Dimitrios Mavroeidis, Kostas Vasileiadis (Gescrap Bilbao Basket); and Michael Bramos (Gran Canaria); head coach Ilias Zouros (Anadolu Efes)

Notable no shows: Dimitris Diamantidis (Panathinaikos) due to retirement; Kostas Koufos (Denver Nuggets) and Sofoklis Schortsanitis (Maccabi Tel Aviv) due to injury.

3. (6) FYR Macedonia – According to at least one source, the following eleven have been named to the 12-man roster: Gjorgi Cekovski (MZT Skopje); Stojan Gjuroski (Louisiana Tech); Aleksandar Kostoski (Kumanovo); Kristijan Nikolov (?); Kiril Nikolovski, Marko Simonovski, Darko Sokolov (Feni Indistrija); Predrag Samardziski (Lietuvos Rytas); Damjan Stojanovski (Lukoil Akademik); Vojdan Stojanovski (BC Donetsk); Todd Zafirovski (Duke University); coach Marjan Lazovski (Torus Skopje)

Notable no shows: Merely the name players from the Macedonian Miracle at Eurobasket 2011 — Pero Antic, Vlado Ilievski and of course Bo McCalebb. Apparently, the Marques Green experiment didn’t work, either…

Notable no shows: Sullivan Phillips (BC Prievidza) ruled ineligible due to past play with Team Bermuda; Ryan Richards (Gran Canaria) to play for Team Jamaica.

    Gabe will love this……

He kept saying over and over here that Greece just better hope that it can beat Nigeria and it’s NBA players if it even wants to qualify for the Olympics.

Well Gabe, Greece just beat Nigeria 88-76.

    So far now,

    Greece 66 – Russia 63

    Greece 82 – Lithuania 70

    Greece 88 – Nigeria 76

And that’s with two of the Greece’s rotation players out of all three of the games so far with injuries. Not to mention that Greece’s best player, Spanoulis, didn’t even play against Russia or Lithuania.

Looks like Greece will have no problem qualifying Gabe

lol at phileus, mike, and Gabe saying Greece had to worry itself about even qualifying………….

And one more thing for you guys to know, they interviewed one of Brazil’s coaches and he said,

“Coach, what did you think about Greece in the game against Nigeria?”

“Spanoulis is a very smart and very big time player. As long as they have him, they are the team with the best chance to win gold, besides the United States.”

Funny how gabe swears that Greece has no chance to medal and could not possibly be even as good as Argentina…Gabe, I am pretty sure that the coaching staff of Brazil knows Argentina’s level better than you do, considering they are main rivals.

That Brazilian coach just said Greece was the second favorite of the tournament. So please explain again how Greece has “no chance to medal” again……..

Those are friendlies. Let’s see how they do when the games start to count. They have not even make the semi-finals in the last two global tournaments.

the coach of Brazil was he a football coach???
In my opinion Greece should be alerted (ok not worried) very much in order to go to the olympics since usually we don`t do well in pre-olympic tournaments.
Of course the favorites for the gold is USA and with small difference Spain (i give 51% USA – 49% Spain) perhaps in 2-3 years things will be much better for Greece but for now the coach of Brasil is playing us.
He was right about one thing though a player like Spanoulis can not be found in any squad except USA and Spain, Juan Carlos ”la bomba” Navaro (even if i dispice him) is more or less the same level with Spanoulis.

Ginobli? Unlike Spanoulis he’s actually lead his team to a gold medal.

Yes Ginobili too is probably in the same level.
Personally I consider spanoulis and la bomba better players.
Leading a team in a championship or a gold doesn’t t mean much on personal level, you think that Nowitski since he hadn’t lead Germany to a gold isn’t 3 times better than spanoulis , la bomba and Ginobili combined?
I can name many many players better than Ginobili than never won anything.
But anyway he is very good!

In case you did not know, many people consider Brazil’s coach the BEST coach in the world. MANY people think that.

Oh and Spanoulis is a better player than La Bombo. La Bombo is a living legend and one of the best international players ever. But in comparison to Spanoulis –

They are the same in offense, but in defense, Spanoulis is much better. So actually, Spanoulis I think is a bit better. But both players are amazing when they are heatlhy.

Did you just post under three different accounts in a row? Is that a new record? 😛

    —

By the way, the list of notable no-shows for Team USA should also include Derrick Rose and D-Wade for injuries, shouldn’t it? Impressive that Team USA is still favored to win with 60% of its starting line-up out. God bless America 😉

I don`t know about the others but I just post under just one account!

    D-Wade not playing??
when did this injury came up?
He looked very healthy during the finals.
USA starts as the favorites as i have posted before because of the tramendous depth they have. Are you surpised by that?
Except the center position where you have a problem in the last years producing a good center in all other positions you have better players.
Now if having better players means that you will have a better team as well…this we `ll have to wait and see.

    @zahos

D-wade was dealing with knee trouble throughout the playoffs, he managed to play through it well in the finals, but it was certainly bothering him during the Boston series. He was thinking about surgery, but that hasn’t been confirmed one way or another.

Yeah it’s a shame that D-Wade is not playing but he was dealing with knee issues throughout the playoffs. It definitely hurts the U.S.A team since he was the leading scorer for them in the Beijing olympics.

I hope he has a speedy recovery from the surgery to defend the heat title.

Gabe – Ginobili didn’t lead Argentina to a gold medal. Scola did. Get your facts right.

Do you ever get anything right?

Scola completely carried his team to the gold medal against Italy.

Please can you just for ONCE not make your own facts and history here?

Yeah but Ginobili carried his team in the semi-finals against the US. I bit of a more important game I would say. Considering the US won the past 3 Olympics and the one after that as well and will win this one too. In fact Ginobli led his team to an upset and preventing the US from not winning the only Olympics they didn’t win with NBA players.

Zahos – No its virtually assured he will be fine for the start of next season, but if he had played in the olympics it would have delayed the start of his NBA season. He chose to defend the NBA title over getting the Olympic gold, which I fully support.

Hey Miguel, the whole world knows including your pet parrot that Ginobili is the heart and soul of team Argentina. One game against Italy doesn’t matter. When Pau Gasol leads the Lakers in scoring. does it mean Kobe is not their best player? C’mon, think a little bit our there.

By the way, Chris Bosch announced he’s not playing for the US. It’s a loss, but Kevin Love can fill that hole offensively and of course on the boards. However, Love is not as athletic defensively with the shot blocking.

Scola was voted as the best Argentine national team player ever by his own federation. So actually you are wrong.

But of course as a typical American, you associate “the whole world” to people that live in the USA only.

Well, I checked Wikipedia on this federation thing, and I didn’t see it. Show the link, or direct me to the site that says this about Scola. I’m open to admitting if I’m wrong, Derek.

To me, Ginobili is worthy to be in the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is that great. Olympic Gold beating the US with NBA players, Euroleague champion and MVP, and 3 time NBA champion. Once, where he should have been MVP against Detroit. A truly clutch player. It’s just not close comparing him to Scola, who is a good NBA player.

Ginobili was Euroleague Final Finals MVP, not Euroleague MVP.

    Two different awards.
